NFL Rumors: Commanders’ Brandon Aiyuk Pursuit Takes Unexpected Turn As Insider Cools Down Growing Speculation

Even after his public desire to sign with the Washington Commanders, there is a new wrinkle in the story for Brandon Aiyuk.

The Brandon Aiyuk saga has hung over the NFL throughout this year’s offseason. Distancing himself from the San Francisco 49ers, it has been an awkward, messy situation for both parties. But recently, a new beginning seemed to be on the horizon.

As the star wide receiver made his grievances known, a divorce between the two felt inevitable. Aiming for a fresh start, a move to the Washington Commanders seemed to be in the works. But in recent weeks, those hopes have started to dwindle.

Brandon Aiyuk Might Not Find His Way to the Washington Commanders

Beginning with an uncertain contract extension, a deal finally came through between Aiyuk and the 49ers in 2024. However, after an ACL injury in the first year of that extension, the former Pro Bowler went AWOL.

Missing the entire 2025 campaign, he was eventually placed on the reserve/left squad list. At the time, he accepted his fate, with no new developments from either party. However, as the offseason has worn on, the situation has come back into the spotlight.

With San Francisco trying to establish its future, and Aiyuk not cooperating, the two sides appeared to be at a standstill. That was until the former first-round pick broke his silence on social media, going after the organization.

Accusing them of lying, while claiming they were scared of what he could do on the field, he made his desire to move to a new franchise, specifically the Commanders, well-known.

Thanks to his ties to Jayden Daniels, a deal appeared likely between the two sides. But after a public spat on the internet with the former Offensive Rookie of the Year, those plans appeared more questionable.

Now, to make matters worse, Jeremy Fowler has added further doubt to the situation. Beyond Terry McLaurin, the wide receiver depth for Washington is suspect at best. With their need at the position no secret, Aiyuk could have filled that role perfectly, at least on paper.

But during an appearance on NFL Live, Fowler pegged them as a landing spot for a different star wide receiver still sitting in free agency, Stefon Diggs. “I’m looking to the DMV, that’s where he’s from. The Commanders certainly need a receiver.”

Unfortunately, he specifically dismissed the possibility of Aiyuk going to the Commanders. “I think they’re looking for more of a speed option at this point. We’ll see, there are several veterans they could look into. I don’t think it’s going to be Brandon Aiyuk at this stage.”

The direction Washington chooses remains a mystery at this point. But based on their performance in recent years, Diggs would be the clear-cut answer for them. Aside from the attitude questions surrounding Aiyuk, his performance before injury with the 49ers left a lot to be desired.

Suiting up in just seven games, he totaled just 374 receiving yards without adding a single touchdown to the tally. On the other hand, Diggs, the four-time Pro Bowler, despite coming off an ACL tear himself, put together a remarkable campaign for the New England Patriots.

Starting every game for them, he added 1,013 receiving yards and four touchdowns before recording his first postseason touchdown since 2020 during their run to the Super Bowl. As a result, he ranked at number seven on PFN’s WR Impact Metric.

Ultimately, it’s going to be the Commanders’ decision on how they fill their wide receiver room. But for the time being, it seems like the momentum is swinging away from Aiyuk to join the roster alongside his friend.
