During free agency, motivations vary from player to player. For some, the allure of cashing in on their first big-money deal looms. The ability to not have to worry about money and improving their lifestyle becomes a priority.
Additionally, some veterans who already accumulated life-changing cash may tire of losing and want to join a winner to secure a championship.
Then, there is LeBron James. James, well into his 40s, is a billionaire with more accolades than all of his contemporaries. Yet he finds himself on the market, seeking a fit for his skills at this stage of his career. A recent quote by one of his closest allies sparked a pointed response from an NBA analyst.
Kendrick Perkins Believes LeBron James is Hunting for A Championship
As free agency continues to progress, James’ next destination became one of the most talked-about storylines in the NBA summer. Paul, his longtime agent and business partner, discussed James’ motivations.
“He’s not chasing the ring. You hear these things like. Why do he have to chase? He got four. There’s nothing to chase. He’s not chasing a ghost or anything like that.”
Perkins, who won a championship in 2008 with the Boston Celtics, did not buy Paul’s assertion.

If the past is prologue, history backs up Perkins. James left the Cleveland Cavaliers to win a championship with the Miami Heat. After winning two, he returned to Cleveland and won one more.
Following that, he left Ohio for the Los Angeles Lakers, where he claimed his fourth ring. Plus, during the stops in Cleveland and Los Angeles, James, through discussions with management, orchestrated trades and roster moves geared toward winning a championship.
Now, teams like the Golden State Warriors, Heat, and Cavaliers remain as possible destinations. Each team either has two other superstars in place or believes they can compete with James on the team. Not just compete but become an instant title threat.
The timeline is tied to James’ decision. He can take all the time he wants. How that plays out remains to be seen.
