Lakers fans got a shock on June 30 when Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN that LeBron James will play a 24th season in the NBA, but not with the Los Angeles Lakers.
That single line set off a wave of speculation about where James would land next. Now, ESPN insider Shams Charania has come out with a fresh update on where things stand.

In a recent segment on “SiriusXM’s NBA radio,” Charania said he’s hearing five teams are in the mix for LBJ. They are Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, Minnesota, and Philadelphia.
“Every team that’s in it still believes they have a chance and is still engaged with Rich Paul on a daily basis, hourly basis. Figuring out what it would look like, what the vision is. Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, Minnesota, Philadelphia, those are like the five most predominant teams that I’ve been hearing about, mostly,” Charania said during the segment.
But he didn’t stop there, and also added that out of those five, three teams have separated themselves as the top suitors. They are Cleveland, Miami, and Philadelphia.
“When I talk to other teams, they look at Cleveland a lot, Miami, and Philadelphia. Those are the 3 teams that others view as strong here,” Charania added.

The Cleveland rumors are not new. They have actually been building since last year, right around the time James picked up his $52.6 million player option with the Lakers for the 2025-26 season. At one point, he was even spotted at the Cavaliers’ practice facility, and that alone was enough to get fans talking about a possible return home.
Honestly, a move to Cleveland would make a lot of sense. James’ story with that city goes way beyond numbers on a stat sheet. He took the Cavs to their first-ever NBA Finals back in 2007, when he was just 22 years old.
Then, after his stint in Miami, he returned to Cleveland in 2014 and promised to bring the city its first championship. He kept that promise in 2016.

However, not everyone was convinced last year that James would return to Cleveland. NBC Sports’ lead NBA writer Kurt Helin noted that the Cavaliers’ front office seemed more focused on the future than on reliving the past, with the team committed to building around its younger players.
“For example, a lot of fans tried to link him to a return to Cleveland (league sources told NBC Sports the Cavaliers are not that interested, but let’s use them as a hypothetical): With a third team, a deal can be made if it’s LeBron for Darius Garland and Max Strus.”
“Why would the Cavs do that, giving up young players and getting 15 years older (and arguably worse) in the short term to rent LeBron for a year or two. And trading LeBron to Cleveland is a lot less complicated than most other destinations,” Helin wrote in his report last year.
Whether that’s still the mindset today is hard to say. But if James does go back to Cleveland, it would be a huge moment for the fans there.
Next in line is Miami. James won two championships there, and the idea of him teaming up with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo sounds exciting on paper. But according to insider Brian Windhorst, the chances of that actually happening are very low.
“What I suspect is going to be important to him is that he is going to get through the regular season without having to go to extraordinary measures. Without having to play 38 minutes per game, take 25 shots. I think Philly can make a compelling case.”
“But so can Cleveland. Can anybody make a more compelling case on the roster than Cleveland, and more compelling on the home front? The teams out there that I’ve talked to are skeptical. They don’t know for sure, but they’re skeptical,” Windhorst said during a segment on ESPN.
Now, coming to the 76ers. According to ESPN salary cap expert Bobby Marks, the 76ers are expected to be able to offer James only the $3.9 million veteran’s minimum.
If LBJ were to accept that deal, he would join forces with Joel Embiid. While the pairing would grab headlines, it would also be an interesting fit. It is because both players have very different styles of play.
At the end of the day, nobody knows for sure where the King will end up. For now, fans everywhere will just have to wait and see which team gets the call.
