As the second week of the 2026 NHL free agency period rolls on, the rumor mill is spinning fast around a future Hall of Fame forward, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are smack in the middle of the noise.
Toronto Maple Leafs Eye Future Hall of Fame Forward
Patrick Kane is the future Hall of Famer at the center of speculation this week. He remains unsigned after completing the one-year, $3 million contract he signed with the Detroit Red Wings last summer.
Following a productive season in which he recorded 57 points in 67 games, the 37-year-old winger has drawn interest from several playoff contenders, with Toronto reportedly among the teams that have checked in.
NHL insider David Pagnotta recently shed light on Toronto’s level of interest, suggesting that discussions have taken place, although nothing appears to be close. “I think there’s been some conversations with Toronto, but I think very loose,” Pagnotta said.
The speculation picked up around the NHL Draft after Maple Leafs first-overall pick Gavin McKenna revealed that Kane, his childhood hockey idol, had personally reached out to congratulate him. That interaction quickly fueled talk that Toronto could pursue the veteran winger this offseason.
Beyond the connection with McKenna, Kane also offers the kind of experience contenders value. A three-time Stanley Cup champion and Conn Smythe Trophy winner, he has consistently shown he can produce in big moments. He has also been willing to sign affordable one-year contracts in recent seasons, making him a relatively low-risk option financially.
Why a Deal Could Be Difficult
Despite the excitement surrounding the possibility, several obstacles stand in the way of Kane joining the Maple Leafs.
The biggest issue is Toronto’s salary cap situation. Although the NHL salary cap increased to $104 million for the 2026-27 season, the Maple Leafs have already signed seven free agents and currently sit about $2.75 million over the cap, leaving little room to add another veteran without making additional roster moves.
The Maple Leafs already have plenty of skilled top-six forwards. Their bigger need is adding physical, defensive players, making Kane a less natural fit.
Kane is looking for a team where he can compete for a championship or finish his career in a meaningful place. The Buffalo Sabres are seen as a strong option since Kane is from Buffalo, and the team needs more scoring after Alex Tuch’s departure.
The Chicago Blackhawks are also in the mix, as a return to Chicago would reunite Kane with the franchise where he became a superstar while allowing him to mentor Connor Bedard.

For now, Toronto is expected to monitor Kane’s situation, but Pagnotta doesn’t expect the Maple Leafs to get into a bidding war. Buffalo and Chicago remain the more likely destinations.
