When Will LeBron James Sign? Latest Projected Timetable for the NBA Legend’s Free-Agency Decision

Here is everything fans need to know about the potential timetable for LeBron James signing his next contract in the NBA.

It has been the biggest domino for NBA free agency this year. After eight seasons, LeBron James announced his decision to move on from the Los Angeles Lakers. It marked the end of his longest continuous stint with a single franchise.

Immediately, it slotted him at the top of the unrestricted free agents list, even at 41. So far, no official decision has been made, as a number of teams keep vying for his services. Now, we are trying to piece together when that decision will come through.

The LeBron James Timeline

The rumors of teams trying to add him to the mix stretched back to before the postseason ended. At the time, the two teams in the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks, were in the thick of the conversation.

But over time, the list has only continued to grow. A reunion with his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers was always going to be the storybook ending. But a return to the Miami Heat, especially after they added Giannis Antetokounmpo to the mix, was also a potential pathway.

Other contenders, like the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Philadelphia 76ers, have also become legitimate possibilities as the offseason has dragged on. Through all of it, the Golden State Warriors, with the pipedream of pairing James with Stephen Curry, have been lurking in the background.

Still, no decision has come to pass yet. And fans are starting to wonder. The communication from his camp, though, has been relatively straightforward. During the latest episode of the “Game Over” podcast, his agent, Rich Paul, made it clear.

With regards to a timeline, he claimed, “There is none. I wish I knew. He’s taking his time. He’s really evaluating things. I’ve really left him alone. Play golf, do the things you need to do. He understands where things are. When he’s ready, he’ll let me know.”

Paul has put forward a similar message during all his recent media appearances. And the reasoning might go back to a hint James gave much earlier in the year about his future with free agency.

During an episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast, the four-time MVP made it clear that he was going to take his sweet time before arriving at a decision. Moreover, he even gave an approximate idea of when fans can expect a definitive answer.

“I haven’t even really thought about it too much. Obviously, I understand that I’m a free agent and I can control my own destiny,” he explained near the end of May, before chalking down a timetable.

“I haven’t even taken my family vacation yet, which is going to happen after the Memorial Day. That’s kind of the thing at the forefront of my mind. But I think at some point up in June, late June, as July rolls around free agency starts to get going and as July’s rolling maybe into August we start to kind of like get a feel of what my future may look like.”

As an unrestricted free agent for the first time in nearly a decade, James holds all the cards on the table. As a result, it isn’t incomprehensible that he wants to take his sweet time before finalizing a deal.

And, as the evidence suggests, it might be a while before the basketball world knows where his potential swansong is going to be.
