‘He’s Been Cast Aside As Overpaid’ — Hall of Famer Compares Leo Carlsson’s $90 Million Situation To Darnell Nurse’s Contract

Leo Carlsson may have secured one of the richest contracts in NHL history, but the spotlight that comes with it could prove just as challenging as the deal itself. Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Pronger believes the Ducks’ rising star is stepping into the same situation that followed Darnell Nurse after he signed his eight-year, $74 million contract.

In Pronger’s view, blockbuster contracts change how players are judged, often making the salary as much a talking point as the performance.

Chris Pronger Compares Leo Carlsson’s Deal to Darnell Nurse Contract

Carlsson is officially staying with the Anaheim Ducks after the organization matched the Philadelphia Flyers’ five-year, $90 million offer sheet, but Pronger, a 2015 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, believes the contract marks the beginning of a different kind of challenge.

While many have focused on the record-setting salary, the Hockey Hall of Famer argued that the greater test will be handling the expectations that now come with being the NHL’s highest-paid player by average annual value.

“The Ducks have matched the offer sheet by the Philadelphia Flyers. Carlsson will stay a Duck,” Pronger said in a video shared on X before explaining why the conversation should extend beyond the contract itself.

“My biggest thing is that now there’s a lot of pressure on Carlsson.” He added, “There’s going to be a lot of pressure, a lot of scrutiny, and a lot of notoriety on this young player.”

Pronger made it clear that his comments were not a criticism of Carlsson’s ability. Instead, he praised the 21-year-old’s long-term potential, calling him “a budding star” and adding, “The sky’s the limit.”

He also pointed out that many fans overlook the serious thigh injury Carlsson battled during the 2025-26 season, saying people “don’t understand the injury he had last year… and how much that hampered him.”

Despite those setbacks, Pronger noted that Carlsson still delivered strong production before elevating his game in the playoffs. He had 67 points in 70 regular-season games, and later registered 11 points in 12 playoff games.

To explain why the contract changes the conversation, Pronger pointed to Nurse, whose eight-year, $74 million contract has followed him throughout his career.

“Let’s look at Nurse, for example,” Pronger said. “He has a career year… signs a massive contract for $9.25 million, and ever since he signed that, he’s been cast aside as overpaid.”

“The number associated with the player is often how fans, managers, and outside people value or look at that player instead of asking what role or value he provides the team,” Pronger explained. He even admitted, “Sometimes we have to set that dollar amount aside, and it is incredibly hard. I fall into the same trap.”

Still, Pronger believes Carlsson has every opportunity to rewrite that narrative. “If this kid goes out and gets 110 or 115 points next year, is he overpaid? That’s a question that needs to be answered, and we won’t know until the end of next year,” he said.

Pronger also examined the Flyers’ failed pursuit of Carlsson, saying the aggressive offer sheet reflected Philadelphia’s desire to land “a top superstar, a No. 1 center.”

With Anaheim matching the deal, he believes the Flyers must now search for other solutions because franchise centers rarely reach unrestricted free agency in today’s NHL, making trades the more realistic path forward.
