Last season, Puka Nacua was phenomenal with the Los Angeles Rams, putting together the strongest campaign of his career. He posted personal bests across key receiving categories and earned first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl recognition.
However, several off-field incidents overshadowed his performance. And many reporters and analysts questioned how Nacua handled himself away from football.

Still, three-time Super Bowl champion Michael Irvin pushed back against that narrative during a recent appearance on the “4th & South” podcast.
“So I tell them all, great men must understand this, and great men must mitigate the kid in him so it doesn’t screw up the king in him, and both of them are in us,” Irvin said, urging people to view young stars with more perspective.
“You take a guy like Puka, and everybody, ‘Oh Puka this, Puka that.’ Puka’s going through – he’s a 23, 24-year-old kid out drinking and doing things and having fun. So, you got to monitor that, too. You can’t just fall over it and let these people start marking you and make you that.”
Nacua’s offseason behavior was the main reason behind those headlines. In March, a Los Angeles woman filed a civil lawsuit, accusing Nacua of making “unprovoked antisemitic remarks” and biting her on the shoulder during an alleged December incident.

Then, he received a $25,000 fine after publicly criticizing NFL officials on X. He also reportedly attempted to sneak a friend into the Rams’ facility, which violated team rules and drew further scrutiny.
Irvin, however, believes the bigger picture often gets ignored when young athletes face public criticism.
“I think that’s an issue we have in this country,” Irvin said. “We’re always trying to put all of these moral strappings on 21, 22, 23-year-old kids that have fought their way out of a hellhole in the beginning, when we really should be undergirding them and helping them and giving them a little leeway on some of the decisions they may make because they’ve come from such places. You know what I mean? I think that’s what we should do.”
However, Nacua apparently understood the situation he was in and was determined to change the conversation.

In March, he voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility to solve these issues and for personal growth. Going into next season, that decision could become a turning point because his talent has never been in doubt.
In only three seasons with the Rams, he has already topped 4,000 receiving yards while scoring 19 touchdowns.
The 2025 campaign showed just how high Nacua’s ceiling can be. The Rams star finished with career-best numbers across the board, hauling in 129 receptions for 1,715 yards and 10 touchdowns.
He has also earned two Pro Bowl selections and set NFL rookie records with 105 catches and 1,486 receiving yards during his first season. Those totals placed him among the NFL’s most productive pass catchers. That rapid rise explains why Los Angeles views him as a cornerstone of its offense.
Still, the offseason served as a reminder that success on the field does not erase poor decisions away from it. Although the Rams have continued to support their standout receiver, the responsibility now falls on Nacua.
If he learns from those mistakes and stays focused, he can secure the long-term future in Los Angeles while proving Irvin’s faith is well placed.
