‘She Could Reinvent Herself’ — Writer Predicts Dianna Russini’s ‘Path Back Into the Media’ After Mike Vrabel Scandal

Dianna Russini has been away from the NFL since she resigned from The Athletic. Could she work as a media member again?

Three months after the scandal involving Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini exploded, their careers look totally different. Vrabel missed the final day of the 2026 NFL Draft and has resumed activities as the coach of the New England Patriots, while Russini resigned from her role on The Athletic. What does the future hold for the reporter?

Could Dianna Russini Take a New Role as a Sports Personality After Her Scandal?

While Russini’s personal life belongs to no one but her family, the scandal raised questions about her journalism standards, especially as it relates to news involving teams coached by Vrabel. The fallout from the situation makes it likely that her career in this specific role could be over.

That doesn’t mean, however, that Russini will necessarily be out of the sports media. She still holds a prominent name after a career that included a prolonged period with ESPN. With numerous appearances on other shows, it’s likely that we haven’t seen the last of Russini as a media member.

A recent article written by Michael Grant, and published at Awful Announcing, discusses her next steps. Grant speculates that she could be useful to networks because of the audience she would bring, especially after the scandal. He also lists Barstool Sports as a possible landing spot for the reporter:

“Russini doesn’t need to be an insider or a reporter,” Grant wrote. “She could reinvent herself as a sports personality by launching a talk show on a streaming platform. It’s not inconceivable that a streamer such as Netflix would offer her a job. It doesn’t care about traditional journalism standards. It cares more about content. Also, remember that Dave Portnoy and Jon “Stugotz” Weiner have already said they would hire her.”

“Making the switch from a sports reporter to a sports personality isn’t that drastic,” Grant added. “Certainly not now. Just look at ESPN’s daily lineup of talking heads. Some are still reporters, but you’ll hear a lot from people just giving hot takes.”

The switch wouldn’t be a first, especially in an ever-changing media landscape. Russini, after all, was one of the most respected reporters around the league. She’s likely to return to work at some point, and, as improbable as it may seem, the sports media could remain her home.

She was recently filmed with her husband as her career remains on hold. The other part of the scandal, Vrabel, is preparing for training camp with the Patriots, starting late in July. They’ll try to return to the Super Bowl, but this time they’ll hope for a different result.
