‘This Sounds Stupid’ — NFL World Reacts As Sean Payton’s ‘Wild Idea’ To Help Bill Belichick Break Legendary Record Gets Revealed

Sean Payton's reported plan for Bill Belichick has raised eyebrows, as it could have helped the legendary coach rewrite the NFL record books.

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is never the one to stay away from headlines, especially when it comes to his creative strategies and out-of-the-box thinking. The veteran head coach was reportedly ready to give up his spot for his longtime friend and NFL counterpart, Bill Belichick, who had a bitter breakup with the New England Patriots in 2024.

According to senior writer Seth Wickersham, Payton considered pitching the idea to Broncos owner Greg Penner that he would step down from his role as head coach and Belichick would be given an opportunity to lead the team until he reached 15 wins, which is good enough to break legendary coach Don Shula’s long-standing career record of 347 wins. While Wickersham called it “a proposal for the ages,” the NFL community didn’t exactly receive the idea as expected.

Sean Payton’s Reported Proposal About Bill Belichick Draws Flak From NFL World

With 73 wins (regular season and playoffs) with the Baltimore Colts and 274 total wins with the Miami Dolphins, Shula built his Hall of Fame resume as the winningest coach in NFL history.

Payton believed Belichick, who has 333 career wins, could achieve the record in a single season. He thought it could be a fitting idea to have Belichick at the helm as the Broncos were going through a major revamp with rookie quarterback Bo Nix at the center.

Former Carolina Panthers offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz outright rejected the idea. “This sounds stupid,” he wrote on X.

Similarly, another NFL fan was baffled by the logic behind the move, saying, “Would have been corny as (expletive) thank god that didn’t happen.”

A Miami Dolphins loyalist, Kyle Crabbs, came up with a wild narrative, asking if Payton was still unhappy about the Broncos’ humiliating 70-20 loss to the Dolphins in 2023. “Sean was that mad about 70 points, huh?” he wrote.

Sports announcer Chase Snyder struggled to connect the dots, puzzled by the timing of the revelation. He asked, “Why would Sean Payton ever admit this? Like, what’s the motive behind sharing it?”

Radio host Austin Elmore was in a similar dilemma. “Sean Payton always be having some wild ideas,” he wrote while reacting to Adam Schefter’s post.

Regardless of the report’s authenticity, Belichick is very close to breaking the all-time career wins record, as he already tops the list for most postseason wins (31).

However, the biggest roadblock for Belichick at the moment is his age. He is already 74, and while he continues to coach football at the University of North Carolina, an NFL comeback looks highly uncertain.
