The Buffalo Sabres have a major hole to fill after trading Alex Tuch to the Washington Capitals in a sign-and-trade deal that included an eight-year, $84 million contract extension. With one of their top scorers gone, speculation is rife that Buffalo could turn to a future Hall of Famer to help replace some of that offensive production.
Buffalo Sabres Eyeing Future Hall of Fame Forward
With most of the top free agents already off the board, Patrick Kane remains one of the biggest names still available. The veteran winger is taking his time in free agency, giving teams that missed out on their top targets another chance to add proven scoring.
Even at 37, Kane showed that he can still produce at a high level. He recorded 57 points, including 16 goals and 41 assists, in 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings last season.
NHL insider John Wiedman reported: “Still a lot of moving parts but sources close to the Kane family indicate he will be joining his hometown Buffalo Sabres this fall on a 1-year deal.”
A move to Buffalo would make sense from several angles. The Sabres have been searching for another elite playmaker on the power play, and Kane remains one of the league’s best passers. Seventeen of his assists last season came with the man advantage, making him an intriguing option to play alongside Tage Thompson.
Financially, the fit works. Because of his age, Kane could sign a one-year contract featuring a modest base salary with performance bonuses, allowing Buffalo to add an impact player without committing significant long-term money.
Still, Kane would not be a direct replacement for Tuch.
Tuch provided size, physicality, and strong two-way play while contributing in all situations, including the penalty kill. Kane, meanwhile, is now best suited to an offensive role in the middle six, where his creativity and puck skills can be maximized without asking him to take on heavy defensive responsibilities.
There is also another reason for caution. Although Kane grew up in South Buffalo, he has had multiple opportunities over the years to join his hometown team. Instead, he chose other destinations, including the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings.
That history leaves some uncertainty over whether a homecoming will finally happen this offseason.

For now, the speculation continues. A one-year deal would give Buffalo an experienced offensive boost while allowing Kane to play close to home. But with the Sabres also committed to developing their young core, the organization could ultimately decide that giving more opportunities to its emerging players is the better long-term path.
