Jannik Sinner is set for an intriguing battle in the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships as he takes on Shintaro Mochizuki. The Japanese tennis star is enjoying a career-best run at the All England Club, having come into the tournament with zero ATP Tour wins under his belt in 2026.
Who is Jannik Sinner’s Opponent, Shintaro Mochizuki?
Ranked 151st in the ATP rankings, Mochizuki has delivered some remarkable performances at Wimbledon, going through three rounds of qualifying before defeating Max Basing and Ethan Quinn in straight sets to start his main draw campaign.
The 23-year-old claimed the biggest win of his career in the previous round, defeating the talented 23rd seed Rafael Jódar in four sets to set up a clash against Sinner.
This will be Mochizuki’s first fourth-round appearance at a Grand Slam, and he has enjoyed an incredible journey to get this far.
Mochizuki started playing tennis at the age of three and made his mark at the elementary school level. He was introduced to the sport by his father, who worked as a taxi driver and tennis coach.
A few years later, he briefly considered switching to baseball but stuck with tennis and received a scholarship to train at the IMG Academy in Florida at age 12.
The breakthrough came in 2019 when a 16-year-old Mochizuki became the first Japanese player to win the Wimbledon boys’ singles title. Further success followed in the Junior Davis Cup, before Mochizuki made the step up to the ATP Tour.
Mochizuki won his first Challenger title in 2023, triumphing at a clay-court tournament in Barletta, Italy. That year also brought him his first win against a top-10 player, as he pulled off a remarkable upset against Taylor Fritz at his home tournament. He went on to reach the semifinals of the Japan Open, showing his impressive potential.
More success followed at the Open Nouvelle-Calédonie Challenger event, where Mochizuki won the singles title in 2025. He also reached the finals of Challenger tournaments in Bangalore and Nottingham, losing to Brandon Holt and grass-court specialist Marin Čilić, respectively.

2026 has proved to be a difficult year for Mochizuki, who considers Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic his idols.
He has turned the tide at Wimbledon with his remarkable performances. Whether he can pull off an upset against Sinner remains to be seen. But Mochizuki has already accomplished an incredible feat by reaching this far at SW19 and can use this run as a springboard to success in the coming months.
