The Edmonton Oilers wasted no time making headlines on the opening day of NHL free agency. In a whirlwind of trades and signings, general manager Stan Bowman reshaped the roster from top to bottom, clearing significant cap space, overhauling the blue line, strengthening the goaltending depth, and adding key pieces throughout the lineup.
Oilers’ Free Agency Moves In The Spotlight
Darnell Nurse (31) | Traded to San Jose Sharks
Edmonton traded away 31-year-old D-man Darnell Nurse’s entire $9.25 million cap hit without retaining any salary, bringing in young defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin and the rights to prospect Zack Sharp.
The move gave the Oilers valuable cap space and added a promising young blueliner for the future. Bowman quickly put that extra flexibility to work by making several more additions to the roster.
Devon Levi (24) | Acquired from Buffalo Sabres
Edmonton sent a 2028 third-round pick to Buffalo in exchange for Levi and a 2028 seventh-round pick.
Levi gives the Oilers another talented young goaltender with considerable upside. His arrival strengthens Edmonton’s depth in net and provides insurance alongside Tristan Jarry while allowing the club to build for both the present and the future.
Edmonton’s Free-Agent Signings & Extensions
Ryan Shea (29) | 5 years x $4 Million AAV
Shea signed a five-year, $20 million contract worth $4 million per season. The reliable defenseman is coming off a strong season and is known for his steady defensive play, penalty killing, and puck-moving ability. He is expected to step into Edmonton’s top four and help replace Darnell Nurse.
Kasperi Kapanen (29) | 1 year x $2.6 Million
The Oilers also brought back Kapanen on a one-year, $2.6 million deal. His speed, relentless forechecking, and postseason experience made him a valuable depth piece last season, and Edmonton expects him to continue providing energy throughout the middle six while contributing on special teams.
Frederik Andersen (36) | 1 year x $2.8 Million
Edmonton signed Andersen to a one-year contract worth $2.8 million. The veteran netminder brings years of NHL experience and playoff success. He is expected to share the crease with Levi and Tristan Jarry, giving the Oilers a balanced mix of veteran leadership and youthful talent in goal.
Mathieu Joseph (29) | 1 year x $1 Million
Joseph agreed to a one-year, $1 million contract. Known for his speed, defensive responsibility, and penalty-killing ability, he also reunites with associate coach D.J. Smith. Joseph will compete for a regular role in the bottom six while providing reliable minutes in defensive situations.
Max Jones (28) | 1 year x $850,000
Edmonton re-signed Jones to a one-year, $850,000 contract. Jones brings toughness, physicality, and a willingness to battle around the net. His style of play makes him a strong candidate to secure a regular spot on the fourth line.
Eduards Tralmaks (29) | 1 year x $850,000
The Oilers signed Tralmaks to a one-year, two-way contract worth $850,000. The 6-foot-3 forward is coming off a career-high 26-goal season in the AHL and a strong performance for Latvia on the international stage. His size, physical style, and hard shot give Edmonton another option to add energy and scoring to the bottom six.
Bowman’s roster overhaul has made the Oilers deeper, more balanced, and ready for another run at the Stanley Cup. And they still have a shade above $6 million in cap space to work with, especially at next year’s trade deadline.
