‘Wrap It Up, It’s Over’ — Oilers Fans Not Too Enthused With Latest Goalie Trade Rumor

The Edmonton Oilers know they cannot afford another season of uncertainty in net, making every goalie rumor impossible to ignore. As the search for a dependable answer continues, each reported target is drawing immediate attention from fans looking for a real upgrade.

The latest name connected to Edmonton has drawn more skepticism than excitement, fueling another heated debate.

Edmonton’s Search for Help in Net Takes Another Turn

The goaltender in question is Elvis Merzlikins, whom NHL insider Frank Seravalli identified as Edmonton’s most likely addition over the next 72 hours during an appearance on Oilers Now. Seravalli said his best guess is that the Columbus Blue Jackets netminder could end up with the Oilers as the team continues searching for stability between the pipes.

The report gained momentum because Columbus appears ready to move on from Merzlikins. Seravalli noted that the veteran is “definitely not going to be tending goal for the Columbus Blue Jackets next year,” making a trade or a buyout the expected outcome.

With one season remaining on his contract, carrying a $5.4 million cap hit, a deal involving salary retention could help make the finances work for Edmonton.

The Oilers’ interest is understandable.

Tristan Jarry has yet to provide the consistency the organization hoped for after his arrival, while the backup situation remains unsettled with Connor Ingram becoming a UFA. Edmonton is firmly in win-now mode, and general manager Stan Bowman cannot afford another season of uncertainty in goal with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading the roster.

Still, the reaction from fans and analysts has been far from enthusiastic.

Oilers writer Shaedon questioned the potential tandem, writing on X, “If our goalie tandem is Elvis Merzlikins and Tristan Jarry, wrap it up. It’s over.” His post showed the concern among many fans who do not see the Columbus veteran as the clear upgrade Edmonton needs.

Others took a more statistical approach.

NHL analyst Jonathan Willis shared Merzlikins‘ 5-on-5 goals against compared to expected goals against over the past several seasons, noting that outside of one difficult campaign, his numbers have generally been close to league average. This analysis suggested the veteran may not be as poor an option as some critics believe.

Golden Hockey remained unconvinced, however, posting on X, “I don’t know why this is even being rumoured. His numbers over the past few seasons suggest he’s worse than Pickard. Not an upgrade in any way, shape or form.”

Whether Edmonton ultimately completes the move remains uncertain, but the discussion highlights the difficult position facing the organization. The Oilers need a dependable goaltender before another championship chase begins, yet many supporters are not convinced Merzlikins is the answer despite the growing trade speculation.
