LeBron James Reveals He’s In Ohio With Free Agency About to Get Underway

On Monday, James posted a video that showed him driving and rapping along to the radio alongside the caption, “Enjoying a nice cruise thru my city.” Many fans and media members were quick to note that James was back in Northeast Ohio.

Immediately, some connected the dots and wondered if he was there to meet with the Cleveland Cavaliers or if this was some kind of cryptic hint about his NBA future. The rumor mill has linked James to a third stint with the Cavaliers for some time, identifying Cleveland as a team to watch if he parts ways with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Cavs had an uneven postseason, having tough series against the Toronto Raptors and Detroit Pistons before being swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Cavs are expected to be active in free agency, but some NBA insiders have been skeptical about whether the Cavs are a realistic suitor for James due to their financial hurdles.

After all, Cleveland already has a payroll of $218,072,505 for next season, which is the second-highest in the NBA. After earning $52,627,153 last season, James would have to agree to a massive pay cut in order to join the Cavs.

The Lakers are expected to make an offer to retain James, though he would fit in as the team’s third option behind Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves (and he will likely have to settle for a pay cut in Los Angeles as well).

With the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder looking like juggernauts in the Western Conference, perhaps James would be interested in heading back to the East in hopes of taking a slightly easier route to the NBA Finals as he tries to win his fifth championship. The scariest teams atop the Eastern Conference are the reigning-champion Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Detroit Pistons.

Recent reports have also linked James to the Golden State Warriors, who decided to keep Steve Kerr as head coach and make a run at one more championship during the Stephen Curry era. James has developed a bond with rivals Curry and Draymond Green over the years and may be intrigued by the idea of playing alongside them. The Warriors are reportedly attempting to acquire Anthony Davis from the Washington Wizards, with the goal of form a Big 4 of James, Curry, Davis, and Green.

It’s worth noting that James hasn’t publicly ruled out retirement, though that appears to be the least likely outcome at this point. It remains to be seen what James will decide, but the fact that he’s posting about being back in Ohio one day before free agency kicks off certainly got the internet’s attention.
