Sophie Cunningham always manages to find herself at the front row or at the epicenter of WNBA entertainment. But it seems as if her latest off-court commentary may have crossed a line for fans.
The Indiana Fever guard, averaging 9.6 points and 1.4 assists per game this season, went viral during Indiana’s 86-77 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on June 22 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
But what sparked Cunningham’s latest viral moment?
Sophie Cunningham’s Podcast Comments Spark WNBA Backlash
The fourth-quarter tangle between teammate Caitlin Clark and Mercury’s DeWanna Bonner prompted the 29-year-old to step in as the Fever’s enforcer.
After Bonner told her to stop gesturing, Cunningham responded with a silent 22-second finger-pointing stare-down that instantly became a league meme.
While Bonner and Cunningham both received technical fouls for the exchange, the drama intensified after the Fever guard discussed the incident on her show and made some claims.

On her podcast, “Show Me Something,” with co-host West Wilson, Cunningham, who played in Phoenix from 2019 to 2024, addressed the viral showdown and revealed insider information about the Mercury’s current locker room chemistry.
“You know, what’s funny though? I know people in their own organization that nobody likes their team this year. They say that they are the unfriendliest group. So, we’re not really the ones who feel that way. Internal people feel that way too,” said Cunningham.
But her remarks weren’t well received by WNBA fans, who flooded social media to voice their displeasure.
USA Today reporter Meghan Hall, questioning the ethics of the statement, wrote, “Goodness gracious. I- 1) This is wildly unprofessional. 2) How is this helping with the points at everything current discourse? 3) There is not any scenario that exists where a player should be saying this about any organization.”
Another user left a critical comment about Cunningham: “Aaaand this is my biggest problem with Sophie. She just comes off so so fake and like a clout chaser. That team all seems happy as hell together from what I can tell.”
“This [expletive] is so weird for her to say as an active player. Like we’re not even past the trade deadline girl, what if a Phoenix player gets traded to Indy, then what?” one fan posted.
Another fan called for media restrictions for active players, stating, “There is no planet where active players should be allowed to host podcasts during the season if they are going to just use it to talk [expletive] on other active players. This is beyond unprofessional.”
One user highlighted the perceived double standard and tweeted, “Big part of the league is unprofessional. U got 🤡‘ communicating with crazy fans on threads who r making threats to a player. And this is where u draw the line?”
The fiery discourse surrounding Cunningham’s claims brought up the fine line players walk when their every action and sentence is under heavy scrutiny 24/7.
While the stare-down highlighted her role as an on-court protector and her ability to turn a routine stare-down into a viral meme, the podcast drama left many wondering where the boundary between trash talk and locker-room etiquette lies.
