The Darnell Nurse trade saga is heating up, and the Edmonton Oilers may finally be approaching a crossroads.
After years of speculation that his $74 million contract would be nearly impossible to move, one of Edmonton’s own Pacific Division rivals has reportedly emerged as a serious suitor. With free agency fast approaching, what once seemed unlikely is beginning to look increasingly realistic.
$74 Million Oilers Star Darnell Nurse Drawing Strong Interest
The relationship between Nurse and the Oilers appears to have shifted over the past year.
Reports earlier this month indicated that the veteran defenseman is open to a trade after learning Edmonton had been exploring ways to move his contract. Rather than waiting to see how things unfold, Nurse reportedly became receptive to a fresh start elsewhere.
His on-ice performance likely contributed to that change. Nurse is coming off one of the toughest seasons of his career, finishing with a minus-12 rating, his lowest since the 2015-16 season, while recording a career-high 88 giveaways.
Beyond the statistics, the weight of his eight-year, $74 million contract has followed him for several seasons. After a disappointing playoff exit in 2026, a change of scenery could benefit both the player and the organization.
According to NHL insider David Pagnotta, one team showing genuine interest is a familiar rival. “Edmonton continues to explore Nurse trade options. Multiple sources say Anaheim has expressed serious interest in Nurse,” Pagnotta said.
Reports suggest Nurse has submitted a list of three to five preferred trade destinations, believed to include the Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, and Boston Bruins.
Notably, the Anaheim Ducks are not believed to be on that list. That doesn’t necessarily eliminate them from the conversation.
If Oilers GM Stan Bowman cannot work out a deal with one of Nurse’s preferred destinations, the defenseman may eventually need to expand his list of acceptable teams. Should that happen, Anaheim could quickly emerge as one of the strongest candidates.
The Ducks also make sense from a hockey perspective.
Anaheim recently traded young defenseman Olen Zellweger to the Buffalo Sabres, leaving an opening on the left side of its blue line. The club also has several defensemen due for new contracts, making an experienced, minute-eating veteran like Nurse an intriguing option despite the financial commitment.
The biggest obstacle remains the contract.
Nurse has four years remaining with a $9.25 million cap hit, and moving that deal won’t be easy. Edmonton may need to retain between 20 and 30 percent of his salary, roughly $1.8 million to $2.7 million annually, to make a trade more appealing.

With the July 1 free agency period fast approaching, time is becoming a factor. If Nurse’s preferred Eastern Conference destinations are unable to put together an acceptable package, attention could quickly shift toward cap-rich teams like Anaheim.
