‘I’ll Sign With the Commanders Tomorrow’ — Evaluating Brandon Aiyuk’s Potential Fantasy Football Value in Washington

Brandon Aiyuk has made it abundantly clear he wants to sign with the Commanders. If that happens, what would that mean for fantasy football?

The NFL offseason always delivers theater, but few storylines carry the weight of a star wide receiver floating in free agency. With Brandon Aiyuk making it no secret he wants to sign with the Washington Commanders, let’s discuss how a new environment might alter the fantasy football landscape.

Brandon Aiyuk’s San Francisco 49ers History

Before an injury-shortened season clouded his immediate future, Aiyuk established himself as a near-elite weapon. Aiyuk joined a rare group of active wideouts to post multiple seasons of at least 75 catches, 1,000 yards, and seven touchdowns before turning 26. That list includes superstars like Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, and Mike Evans.

In fact, Aiyuk was the 12th-highest scoring wide receiver in total PPR points across the 2022 and 2023 seasons. His game is built on efficiency and an ability to stretch defenses down the field. During his peak stretch, 38.8% of his targets came at least 15 yards downfield. That ranked 11th among 82 qualified receivers, placing him ahead of deep threats like Tyreek Hill and DK Metcalf.

At his best, Aiyuk was a pretty effective player. But it’s clear his time in San Francisco is over, and he’s made it no secret he wants to join the Commanders.

Washington operates an explosive offense under quarterback Jayden Daniels, meaning Aiyuk could fit seamlessly into a vertical role. The 2024 Commanders ranked fifth in the league in points per game and seventh in total yards. Adding a downfield maven to this lineup gives Daniels a dynamic element that the current roster lacks.

Overcoming Recent Injury Concerns

The primary hesitation for fantasy managers stems from a devastating 2024 injury. Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus, forcing him to miss 10 games. Even before the medical setback, his efficiency numbers showed signs of regression.

He averaged just 1.33 PPR points per target, a steep decline from his league-leading 2.39 mark in 2023. His utilization inside the 20-yard line also took a massive hit during his final stretch. Aiyuk was targeted on 21.7% of his red zone routes early in his career, but that number plummeted to 14.3% over his last two active seasons.

Stepping into a Commanders offense that ranked sixth in red zone touchdown percentage could help revitalize those numbers. Daniels showed a clear ability to sustain a highly concentrated passing attack when healthy. Terry McLaurin dominated the target share in 2024, his last healthy season, securing 82 catches for 1,096 yards and 13 scores. No other wide receiver on the roster even cracked 700 yards.

Sorting Through the Washington Hierarchy

A common fear when a big-name signing occurs is the threat of target dilution. However, adding Aiyuk does not threaten McLaurin as the clear top option in this passing game. Instead, his arrival would likely suppress McLaurin’s average draft position, making the veteran an even better value. McLaurin has five seasons with at least 77 catches, proving he can handle heavy volume.

The depth chart behind the top spot is remarkably thin. Currently, secondary targets would likely flow to tight end Chig Okonkwo or running back Rachaad White. Okonkwo signed a lucrative three-year contract in free agency, while White remains an elite receiving back. Behind them, rookie Antonio Williams and former first-round pick Treylon Burks project mostly as depth pieces.

Rather than creating a crowded situation, Aiyuk would simply consolidate the targets currently destined for a rotation of unproven assets. There is plenty of room for McLaurin to return high WR2 value while Aiyuk settles in as an upside WR3. Meanwhile, Okonkwo and White would remain fully viable in their respective roles.

Looking ahead to the fantasy playoffs, the schedule offers a clear weather environment in Weeks 16 and 17 with road games against Minnesota and Jacksonville. This provides a clean canvas for a team fighting for a postseason spot. The downside is that both opposing defenses excelled at limiting red zone trips and opponent passer ratings last year. Even with a tough defensive matchup, the lack of winter elements keeps the floor stable.

Ultimately, a move to the nation’s capital represents a calculated risk with a clear path to immediate volume. Fantasy managers should avoid overreacting to the narrative of a crowded locker room that does not exist. Aiyuk would instantly elevate the offensive infrastructure for Daniels while securing a consistent weekly role.

If his price drops, he becomes an ideal target in the middle rounds of drafts. Pairing an elite separator with an ascending quarterback is a proven recipe for fantasy success. Washington might finally provide the concentrated passing game that unlocks both of its star wideouts.
