The Anaheim Ducks have spent the last few years building around a young core expected to push the franchise forward. Yet one of their most recognizable young forwards suddenly finds himself at the center of league-wide discussion after a season that raised questions about his long-term fit.
Several teams are now monitoring the situation closely, including two Eastern Conference teams searching for help down the middle. As interest grows, Montreal and Philadelphia appear positioned to emerge as serious players in a potentially crowded race.
Canadiens, Flyers Eye Mason McTavish as Anaheim Weighs Its Next Move
Mason McTavish has become one of the more intriguing names circulating in the NHL trade market, and the Montreal Canadiens may have competition if they decide to pursue the Ducks center.
While Anaheim is not under pressure to move the 23-year-old, recent reporting suggests multiple teams have checked in on his availability following a difficult 2025-26 campaign. Among them are the Philadelphia Flyers, who continue searching for a long-term answer at center.
In a recent Daily Faceoff column, Anthony Di Marco reported that Philadelphia has been tracking McTavish closely.
“There are now some eyes on the Anaheim Ducks, as teams are gauging what GM Pat Verbeek wants to do with center Mason McTavish,” Di Marco wrote. He added that the Flyers remain interested in adding a center and believe McTavish is “a true center” despite spending significant time on the wing last season.
Di Marco also pointed toward defenseman Cam York as the type of player who could attract Anaheim’s attention if discussions ever progressed towards a hockey trade. However, he emphasized that York has not been offered and is not being actively shopped.
Earlier, a source told insider James Murphy about the Canadiens’ interest in McTavish, “They circled back and called on him… I don’t think it’s at the point of serious discussions or exchanging trade scenarios but the Habs let it be known they’re still interested.”

The interest surrounding McTavish comes after a season that fell short of expectations. Just months after signing a six-year, $42 million contract extension, the former No. 3 overall pick produced 41 points in 75 games and struggled to secure a consistent role. His ice time declined, he spent stretches away from his natural position, and he was even scratched at times during both the regular season and playoffs.
These developments have fueled speculation that a change of scenery could benefit both player and team.
From Montreal’s perspective, the fit is obvious.
The Canadiens have been searching for center depth and remain focused on adding young talent capable of growing alongside their emerging core. McTavish’s age, contract status, and physical style make him an attractive target despite his recent dip in production.
Philadelphia’s interest is equally understandable.
The Flyers have openly prioritized strengthening their center group, and McTavish checks several boxes as a player who could handle significant minutes while still offering room for growth.

Anaheim’s decision may ultimately come down to roster construction. The Ducks possess impressive depth at forward, while questions remain on the blueline. With Leo Carlsson, Cutter Gauthier, Beckett Sennecke and others occupying major roles in the organization’s future plans, McTavish has become one of the team’s most closely watched assets.
