How the NFL World Reacted to the Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade

With Monday’s blockbuster transaction, Heat president Pat Riley finally brought Antetokounmpo to Miami and added him to a list of franchise-changing stars that includes LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, and Jimmy Butler.

Antetokounmpo now joins a Heat squad that reached the NBA Finals in 2023 and is now seen as a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference heading into the new season.

The move sparked reactions across the NFL community.

“Pat Riley finally pulling off a trade,” former NFL stars Will Compton and Taylor Lewan’s page, “Bussin’ With The Boys,” posted.

“The Milwaukee Bucks are trading superstar F Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat. A BLOCKBUSTER,” former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III’s page “Outta Pocket With RGIII” tweeted.

Former Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad Johnson, who had repeatedly claimed his sources expected Antetokounmpo to land in Miami, celebrated after the deal became official.

“I might tell a joke or two, but I’ve never lied to y’all,” Johnson wrote.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the trade sends Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to Miami in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (including the No. 13 selection), a pick swap, and a second-round pick.

Riley had previously maintained that Bam Adebayo would only be available in a trade package for San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, even joking that it would also require eight first-round selections. In the end, Riley stood firm, retained Adebayo, and still managed to acquire Antetokounmpo.

Miami will now pair Antetokounmpo with Adebayo to lead contention in the Eastern Conference, triggering former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho to think good days are coming for the Heat.

“The Heat are closer to a championship today than they were yesterday,” Acho said in the latest episode of the “Speakeasy” podcast after the blockbuster trade. “Realistically speaking, that’s what the hell matters. Because Giannis Antetokounmpo led a team to the finals… So with all due respect to how you feel about the trade, the Miami Heat are closer to a championship today with Giannis Antetokounmpo, and with Bam Adebayo, of which they will likely move potentially, they’re closer today than they were yesterday.

“They’ve been a playing team for the last five years, five years consecutively, they’ve been a playing team. So at minimum, yes there are questions in regards to the backcourt, nobody can dispute that. Would I prefer to keep and retain Tyler Herro? Absolutely. But they’re closer to a championship today, and that is all that matters. That’s all that matters.”

Former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant also weighed in on the discussion.

“Greek freak to the Heat is crazy!” Bryant tweeted.

The Boston Celtics were another team heavily involved in pursuing Antetokounmpo. After expressing interest before February’s trade deadline, Boston reportedly intensified its efforts this offseason. ESPN reported that the Celtics offered a package centered around Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks, but Milwaukee ultimately preferred Miami’s proposal.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor, Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam played a major role in choosing Miami’s offer over Boston’s. Haslam reportedly wanted to avoid the possibility of Brown requesting a trade shortly after arriving in Milwaukee, particularly after dealing with trade demands involving Antetokounmpo and Myles Garrett.

Milwaukee sought greater long-term certainty and opted for the Heat’s package, which offered a larger collection of assets and greater future flexibility.
