The Montreal Canadiens were just handed a significant setback in their offseason blueprint following a major extension out west.
General manager Kent Hughes had prioritized adding a veteran, physical presence to solidify Montreal’s young blue line ahead of the free agency market opening on July 1.
Rumors heavily linked the Canadiens to a shutdown defenseman who was expected to command immense interest on the open market. However, those plans have officially been thwarted.
The Edmonton Oilers officially took their top defensive target off the board, signing the rugged blue-liner to a lucrative long-term contract extension to remain in Alberta.
Oilers Secure Shutdown Defender Ahead of Free Agency, Ruining Canadiens’ Plans
The Oilers finalized a five-year, $20.5 million contract extension with 33-year-old defenseman Connor Murphy, locking him down at a $4.1 million average annual value.
Murphy was originally acquired by Edmonton from the Chicago Blackhawks before the 2026 trade deadline and made an immediate impact, providing a steadying presence on a blue line that desperately needed defensive structure. The deal comes just one day after forward Jason Dickinson committed to a five-year, $20 million deal, keeping two premier pending unrestricted free agents off the open market.
For Montreal, losing out on Murphy hurts deeply, as the front office reportedly viewed his right-handed shot and physical edge as the perfect match to insulate their rising defensive prospects.
Instead of testing the lucrative waters of free agency, where desperate teams could have driven up his price, Murphy chose stability and a winning environment. He expressed immense appreciation for how quickly his family adjusted to the new city since arriving at the trade deadline.
“Being a part of Edmonton, my family and myself felt super welcomed and really felt like we hit it off with the team, with the families, the wives and the kids, having a two-year-old now,” Murphy said.

“We wanted something that where we are, we’re going to be happy and comfortable with. With the team, the hockey environment and high-end talent and the ceiling of what the team is capable of, really strives a lot of motivation and passion that I felt I revitalized with since being traded.
“So, it made that excitement to make it a top priority to keep it going and there wasn’t another situation that could have captured that going into free agency.”
Murphy’s physical style provides the Oilers with elite net-front defense and shot-blocking capabilities, which are crucial attributes for their championship aspirations. Entering a dressing room already anchored by superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, Murphy is focused on integrating into the existing leadership core.
“There are so many guys that have been here for many years, so I honestly think I can speak for Jason in that worth, we’re just coming in and trying to gel and feel like we can learn off these guys, the ropes of how it’s been with the team and the success that they have created since they’ve been here,” Murphy said.
With Murphy secured through 2031, Edmonton bolsters its top-four defensive core while Kent Hughes must pivot his focus to alternative free-agent targets.
