Jannik Sinner will have his sights set on rebounding at the top of the tennis world after a shock second-round loss at the French Open brought an end to his historic run. As he prepares to defend his Wimbledon crown, the Italian has opened up about why his family rarely attends his matches.
Jannik Sinner Opens Up on Why His Family Rarely Attends Matches
Unlike some tennis players who like to travel to tournaments with their entourage, Sinner’s family members rarely appear in the stands to cheer him on at matches. His parents, Hanspeter and Siglinde, aren’t usually seen at his matches, and the world No. 1 even revealed once how his mother gets incredibly anxious while watching his matches.
In an interview with Vogue, Sinner shared why his family members are rarely seen in the stands for his matches. He also shared that even when he is back home, tennis isn’t usually the topic of conversation.
“I think they just leave me alone with what I need to do. I have my job, and they have their jobs, you know. I know what’s best for me and what I need to do. They know tennis, of course, but not as much as I do because they’ve never played [laughs]. This is also just how we are as a family. We like to support each other, but we also give each other space. And when we’re at home, we never mention tennis, we always talk about different things,” Sinner said.
Nevertheless, Sinner’s parents and several other family members were frequently seen in the stands as he competed in the Italian Open this year. His girlfriend, Laila Hasanovic, has also been seen cheering him on from the stands at several events over the last few months.
During the interview, Sinner also spoke about spending time with friends and family during his break from tennis after his shock early exit at the French Open.
After a much-needed break, Jannik Sinner is back on the tennis court and will be eager to return to his dominant best at the Wimbledon Championships. After defeating Carlos Alcaraz to win last year’s final at the All England Club, the 24-year-old will be determined to add another Grand Slam to his tally next month.
Only a select group of players have won the Wimbledon title back-to-back, and Sinner will have the opportunity to join that exclusive club that includes Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, and Alcaraz.
