Why Dan Hurley’s UConn-Duke White House Suggestion Drew Backlash

Hurley attended the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House last week, where he suggested staging a college basketball game between UConn and Duke on the White House grounds.

“That would be good, man,” Hurley told TMZ when asked about the possibility of a college basketball game being played at the White House. “I think UConn should definitely be in it, maybe UConn-Duke. That would be pretty cool, man.”

Some found the concept interesting, but some heavily criticized the idea of hosting a basketball game outdoors and took issue with Hurley’s comments, and among the critics was NFL analyst Clarence Hill Jr.

“Typical MAGA coach. Doesn’t care about his players or the communities they come from

Just like the administration,” Hill wrote.

UConn and Duke are already set to meet during the upcoming nonconference schedule in November at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The game is expected to be one of the high-voltage games of the college basketball season, with UConn entering the year after a national championship game appearance in 2026 and both programs seen as title contenders.

Hurley didn’t offer a political endorsement with his proposal, but he acknowledged that the reaction to his attendance at UFC Freedom 250 had been intense. According to CT Insider, the UConn coach said the criticism he received following the event was overwhelming.

Hurley spoke to reporters at the Werth Family Champions Center on Thursday and explained that the White House basketball idea came in response to a quick question and was not something he had seriously considered beforehand.

However, Hurley also said that he would welcome the opportunity to participate in such an event.

“I would love to play there,” Hurley said. “As a basketball fan, watching some of those college games get played on aircraft carriers and military bases, those things were cool as hell. If there was a way to get a court there to create that atmosphere that I saw at the fights, that was amazing.

“It was amazing to be at a sporting event surrounded by servicemen and women, first responders, people in sports, people in business, and people in politics. If we could ever play a game in that type of setting? Sign me up.”

However, many people, such as Hill, viewed Hurley’s public enthusiasm for the idea as helping normalize or align with the political setting surrounding the event.

The controversy comes at a time when the sports world has already seen tensions emerge over political associations. Even the NFL recently dealt with a situation involving New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart and defensive lineman Abdul Carter following a Trump-related endorsement controversy, which reportedly led to a closed-door team meeting moderated by veterans Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Jameis Winston.
