Cameron Dicker quickly became one of the best kickers in the NFL. He has been with the Los Angeles Chargers since 2022, and in 2025, he was elected to his first Pro Bowl after scoring 38 of his 41 field goal attempts. And his routine before a game caught the attention of former U.S. soccer players.
Cameron Dicker Reveals His Weekly Preparation Routine for NFL Games
Even though football is a physical game, kickers don’t receive contact nearly as much as a regular player, and this allows them to have an easier schedule throughout the week in preparation for Sunday. It’s not an easy job: The position just demands a little bit less preparation for the body.
Dicker appeared on a panel with two U.S. soccer legends and revealed how he gets through the week. Sitting with Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, two of the most important American soccer players of all time, the kicker gave away his preparation plans before a Sunday game:
“Game on Sunday, I kick Sunday. Monday, I do legs. Tuesday, we’re in there for five hours, I’ll do an upper body lift, we look at the game film. Wednesday I kick about 50 balls, I’m out there kicking for an hour, hour and a half. Thursday is a lighter kicking day; I’ll do the field goals, hit some kickoff, and then do legs again. and then two days of recovery,” Dicker said.

The answer caught Howard and Donovan off guard. Soccer players undergo a much more intense training schedule during the week, and more often than not, they play twice a week in multiple competitions at the same time. Both joked that, when comparing Dicker’s weekly training to theirs, they chose the wrong sport.
Howard: “What was I doing for 22 years?”

With the NFL offseason fully underway and the World Cup happening, the two worlds are combining for a great sporting experience for fans around the world. SoFi Stadium, home of Dicker’s team, the Los Angeles Chargers, is hosting World Cup games throughout the tournament.
Howard and Donovan know well how it is to represent the USMNT in a World Cup. Howard represented the nation in three World Cups and acted as the starting goalkeeper in two of them (2010 and 2014). Donovan, on the other hand, represented the USMNT in 2002, 2006, and 2010.
