The FIFA World Cup has been taking over the sports world since last week, and all nations have played one game. Among many great games and some surprises, Portugal’s disappointing draw against DR Congo caught the attention of sports analysts, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance was under scrutiny.
Why Emmanuel Acho Criticized Cristiano Ronaldo’s Opening World Cup Performance
The expectation to watch Ronaldo perform against one of the tournament’s weaker teams was huge. Other superstars, such as Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, and Erling Haaland, scored at least two goals in their opening games. Against Congo, many expected Ronaldo to do the same.
But the forward struggled through most of the game. While he remains one of the biggest superstars in soccer, it was impossible not to notice how much of a bad game he had. And Emmanuel Acho didn’t waste any time criticizing his performance.
Acho noticed how some of Ronaldo’s moves cost Portugal a goal, as he focused more on scoring than on his team winning the game. Acho also stated that Ronaldo “cares more about personal success than team success,” a criticism that has been made throughout his entire career:

“If you happen to watch him play the later half of his career, especially this recent World Cup, you watch him play today. He cost his team a goal. Because Ronaldo doesn’t care so much that his team scores. He cares so much that he scores, and that is the dilemma when you put yourself ahead of the team, ahead of Portugal, all of a sudden, you’re undermining yourself and you’re undermining the team.”
“So I do suggest Ronaldo is hurting his legacy because there comes a point, and I think we’ve arrived at that point, where his name is now bigger than his game,” Acho said on the latest “Speakeasy” podcast episode.

Although he rose to prominence as an NFL linebacker, Acho’s late-night show covers an array of sporting topics, including the NBA and, currently, the World Cup. He noted, for example, how Messi has scored more World Cup goals since turning 35 than Ronaldo scored in his entire career.
With the NFL offseason fully underway and the NBA season recently concluded, the talk around the entire country is the World Cup, especially after a dominant 4-1 win for the USA over Paraguay in the opening. No one will notice how slow the NFL offseason passes with another mega sporting event happening.
