Oilers Trade Rumors: Penguins Insider Reveals What EDM Would Have To Cough Up In Darnell Nurse Trade

Darnell Nurse remains at the center of offseason speculation as a new report sheds light on a key hurdle facing Edmonton.

The Edmonton Oilers knew change could be coming this summer, but few storylines have accelerated as fast as the uncertainty surrounding Darnell Nurse. Once viewed as a cornerstone of the franchise’s blueline, the veteran defenseman is now at the center of growing trade speculation as management searches for ways to reshape the roster.

The situation has created a delicate balancing act for the Oilers. Moving a player with Nurse’s experience would free up future flexibility, but recent reporting suggests that finding a trade partner may come at a steeper cost than many expected.

Penguins Insider Says Oilers Must Sweeten Any Darnell Nurse Trade

Nurse’s name continues to circulate in the world of NHL trade rumors after reports indicated he submitted a short list of approved trade destinations to general manager Stan Bowman. Among the teams linked to the veteran defenseman, the Pittsburgh Penguins remain one of the most intriguing possibilities.

However, according to The Athletic’s Penguins insider Josh Yohe, a move to Pittsburgh is far from a simple player-for-player transaction.

“Darnell Nurse’s name has popped up in recent reports linking him to the Penguins. There is a relationship there, as Nurse played a pivotal role with the Soo Greyhounds when [Kyle] Dubas was the OHL team’s GM,” Yohe wrote, highlighting the long-standing connection between Nurse and the Penguins general manager.

This familiarity may help open the door to discussions, but Yohe made it clear that Pittsburgh is unlikely to absorb the contract without additional incentives.

Nurse carries a $9.25 million cap hit through the 2029-30 season, and his recent performances have fueled concerns around the league. During the 2025-26 campaign, he recorded 24 points in 82 games, posted a minus-12 rating, and failed to register a point during Edmonton’s playoff series.

Yohe addressed that challenge directly, writing, “It’s hard to believe Dubas would make a pure hockey trade for Nurse, given the 31-year-old defenseman’s recent struggles and staggering contract ($9.25 million cap hit for four more seasons).”

This assessment gets to the heart of the issue.

While Nurse still brings size, mobility, and top-four experience, his contract remains one of the largest commitments for any defenseman in the league. As a result, Pittsburgh would likely require compensation for taking on that financial burden.

Yohe then outlined what such compensation could look like.

“There is a plausible trade scenario for Nurse to end up in Pittsburgh, but it would likely require the Oilers to include a sweetener, such as retaining some of his salary or absorbing Ryan Graves’ contract,” Yohe noted.

Graves is signed to a six-year, 27 million contract with a $4.5M AAV. He played just 22 NHL games last season with a solitary point and a -3 rating, making him an underperforming asset.

For the Oilers, that is the reality of the current market. If Edmonton wants to move Nurse’s contract, it may have to give up more than just the defenseman himself or retain 20-30% of his mammoth salary.

As trade rumors continue to build, the biggest question is no longer whether a deal can happen, but how much money Edmonton is willing to swallow to get the deal over the line.
