The Minnesota Lynx got the better of the Portland Fire from the opening tip on Monday, cruising to a blowout win at Target Center.
Head coach Cheryl Reeve’s squad overwhelmed the league’s newest franchise by a 33-point margin, relying on sustained pressure on both ends of the court. The Lynx’s starting five, including Olivia Miles, built a sizable 14-point lead in the first quarter, imposing themselves early.
Why Caitlin Clark Fans Are Crying Foul over Olivia Miles’ Viral Trash Talk
Miles posted 12 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and distributed 5 crisp assists. However, it was not her box score that caught the attention, as the defining moment arrived with just under eight minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Miles jumped a passing lane in the gap for a clean steal and immediately pushed the pace, beating Portland guard Sarah Ashlee Barker down the floor to finish a layup.
Miles turned directly back to Barker and let the trash talk fly. The referee did not appreciate the No. 2 pick’s aggressive edge and immediately stepped in and assessed Miles with the first technical foul of her professional career.
League rules dictate an automatic $500 fine for a player’s first technical foul.

While the aggressive demeanor did not go unpunished, Caitlin Clark fans pointed out a discrepancy in how the rookie’s behavior was perceived compared to the narratives of misconduct surrounding the Indiana Fever star.
As the clip of Miles’ trash-talking surfaced on social media, people were quick to react.
“Think pieces coming or…is that just for 1 player? Can we just move on and maybe accept that these women can sh*t-talk during games and think pieces aren’t needed? Because CC ain’t the only one who talks sh*t. Let them play and not make a big deal about it, please. Miles is 🔥,” one user posted.

“I thought you said that jawing at an opponent while getting back on defense was kid shit and scared shit. It’s cool now? Oh. Ok. **Noticing**,” another commented, calling out Chris Williamson’s criticism of Clark.
The frustration of Clark fans boiled down to selective outrage and moving goalposts that the Fever star has been subjected to, especially during recent weeks.
“If this were Caitlin Clark, they would have posted, look at her, such an attitude. But anybody else, it’s passion and great for the WNBA. Sad, and they think people are dumb and stupid and don’t see it. They think X is real. Most these X folks don’t care or watch the wnba,” one user weighed in.

With analysts and experts seemingly weaponizing Clark’s competitive fire against her, users expressed their disdain toward the intentionally manufactured controversy around Clark to drive cheap engagement.
Away from the media discourse, Miles is absolutely justifying the confidence the Minnesota franchise has placed in her.
