‘Please Do Not Hire Mike Babcock’ — Fresh Panic Emerges Among Oilers Fans as NHL Launches Investigation

NHL launches investigation into Mike Babcock, creating fresh uncertainty around the Oilers' coaching search.

The Edmonton Oilers would’ve expected the offseason conversation to focus on finding a new head coach capable of maximizing a roster led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Instead, they are now linked to a familiar name whose potential return to the NHL continues to divide opinions across the hockey world.

As speculation intensified in recent weeks, questions surrounding that candidate only grew louder. Now, with the league formally getting involved, the focus has moved beyond Edmonton’s vacancy and toward an investigation that could influence what happens next.

NHL Investigation Into Mike Babcock Sends Oilers Fans Into Panic Mode

The Oilers’ interest in Mike Babcock hit a major obstacle after the NHL officially opened an investigation into his 2023 resignation from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The development surfaced shortly after the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Final, with NHL insider Elliotte Friedman posting on X, “NHL to officially begin investigation into Mike Babcock’s 2023 Columbus resignation.”

The investigation carries significant weight because Edmonton has been linked to Babcock throughout its coaching search. Reports indicate the Oilers met with the veteran coach as they evaluated potential candidates, but the league’s review now looms over any possible hiring decision.

The NHL Players’ Association requested the investigation, and its findings could determine whether Babcock faces league discipline and whether Edmonton can comfortably move forward.

The renewed scrutiny stems from allegations that surfaced during Babcock’s brief tenure in Columbus. Reports from 2023 claimed players were asked to share personal photos from their phones and that some images were displayed during team meetings.

Babcock resigned before coaching a regular-season game, and the league’s initial inquiry ended at that point. However, recent reports suggesting additional allegations have prompted the NHL to revisit the situation.

The announcement quickly sparked strong reactions across the hockey world.

NHL analyst Karman Gill urged caution, posting, “Based off what was said in this, please do not hire Babcock.”

Columbus reporter Mark Scheig acknowledged how uncomfortable the renewed attention could be for the Blue Jackets organization, writing, “This is definitely something Columbus didn’t want to have to revisit. #CBJ.”

Others focused directly on Edmonton’s pursuit of the veteran coach.

Analyst Matt Wozniak wrote, “The Oilers are trying extremely hard to convince themselves that whatever Babcock did wasn’t that bad.” Meanwhile, Alex Wiederspiel questioned the optics of a potential hiring, asking, “What does it say about the character of the Oilers leadership group if they’re willing accomplices in bringing this bully who hasn’t coached in seven years into the mix?”

Perhaps the most notable reaction came through NHL insider Jason Gregor, who shared a text message from an NHL agent regarding the rumors. The agent is alleged to have told Gregor, “The opportunity to play with McDavid or Draisaitl is diminished with the potential to be coached by Babcock. It is a valid concern voiced to me by a few of my clients.”

This response highlights why the story has created such a stir.

This is no longer just about Edmonton filling a coaching vacancy. The Oilers must now consider how a potential hire could be viewed by current players, future free agents, player agents, and the wider hockey community.
