‘Reasonable To Move On, Not Personal’ — Montreal Canadiens Urged to Dump $9,450,000 Contract

Sports legal analyst Eric Macramalla urges the Montreal Canadiens to trade a $9.45 million contract to free up essential salary cap space.

The Montreal Canadiens are at a pivotal juncture in their roster rebuild, as internal pressure mounts to optimize their long-term salary cap structure. General manager Kent Hughes has carefully hoarded financial flexibility, but upcoming extensions for core players require aggressive asset management.

With several highly touted prospects graduating through the pipeline faster than anticipated, management must determine whether to retain established veterans or trust their youth.

The goaltending position has specifically emerged as a primary area where a significant roster trade could maximize financial relief while returning valuable draft capital or depth pieces to the organization.

Emerging Prospects Challenge Sam Montembeault’s Future With Montreal Canadiens

The focus of recent trade chatter surrounds veteran netminder Samuel Montembeault, who entered the NHL as a third-round selection. Montembeault is entering the final season of a three-year contract extension worth $9,450,000.

While the 29-year-old has provided reliable play between the pipes for Montreal, the rapid development of younger goaltenders has completely altered the franchise’s long-term outlook. The emergence of high-upside rookie talent has forced local analysts to closely examine the overall financial efficiency of the current depth chart.

According to NHL analyst Eric Macramalla, the cost difference between the veteran and the young talent makes a roster move highly practical. “Next season, Montembeault’s AAV is close to double the combined cap hit of Dobes and Fowler,” Macramalla noted on X.

“We know Dobes and Fowler can play. And Montembeault will have value on the trade market. Reasonable to move on and, in the process, gain that very valuable cap space. Not personal.”

Montembeault currently holds an annual average value of $3.15 million against the salary cap. In stark contrast, prospect Jakub Dobes carries a cap hit of $965,000, while star prospect Jacob Fowler sits at an entry-level cap hit of $938,333.

Combining the two young goaltenders yields a total cap charge of roughly $1.9 million, giving Montreal a clear path to secure significant net savings by promoting its youth.

Both Dobes and Fowler have demonstrated clear readiness for increased professional workloads, making the potential transition much easier for the coaching staff to absorb. Dobes turned in a remarkably strong performance in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Laval Rocket, proving he can handle heavy volume.

Meanwhile, Fowler has continued to excel at every single competitive level since the Canadiens selected him 69th overall in the 2023 draft, including a stellar collegiate run.

With Montembeault having just one year on his current deal, his trade value remains exceptionally high for contending teams seeking an experienced option in net.

Moving him now would allow the Canadiens to convert a short-term veteran asset into future building blocks while simultaneously creating the breathing room needed to navigate the open free-agent market.

As the front office weighs its options this summer, trading the veteran appears to be a highly logical roster decision to accelerate the team’s competitive timeline.
