Trade rumors engulfing Connor Hellebuyck’s future are starting to gain serious momentum this offseason. A combination of his comments after the season, a disappointing year by his standards, and the growing demand for elite goaltending around the league has fueled speculation about his future in Winnipeg.
Connor Hellebuyck Bang In The Middle of NHL Trade Rumors
The speculation began after Hellebuyck’s end-of-season media availability, where the three-time Vezina Trophy winner openly questioned whether the Jets could build a true Stanley Cup contender. He also pointed out the challenges Winnipeg faces in attracting top free agents.
Despite helping Team USA win gold in February, Hellebuyck endured one of the toughest seasons of his career, finishing with an .895 save percentage and a 2.86 goals-against average in 57 games. As a result, many around the league believe Winnipeg could face important decisions this summer.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently highlighted the growing chatter around the league, saying, “What do we know? There’s a trade request, Larkin. There’s a trade request, Nurse. There’s a lot of noise around Hellebuyck.”
That noise continues to grow, although a trade remains far from certain. Hellebuyck is signed for five more seasons with an $8.5 million cap hit and owns a full no-movement clause, giving him complete control over any potential move.
NHL analyst Murat Ates believes teams would line up to pursue Hellebuyck if the Jets ever opened the door to trade talks. “Multiple league sources believe that if the Jets were to shop Hellebuyck in earnest, there’d be a bidding war for his services,” Ates reported.
Ates also noted that several teams could be interested, including Florida, Buffalo, Detroit, Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Utah, and New Jersey: all clubs looking for more stability in goal.
Among the teams linked to Hellebuyck, the Florida Panthers appear to be one of the strongest fits. With Sergei Bobrovsky approaching free agency and no new deal in place, Florida could be searching for a long-term solution in goal. There’s also an obvious connection between the two sides, as Panthers head coach Paul Maurice previously coached Hellebuyck during his time in Winnipeg.
According to reports from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Panthers contacted Winnipeg in May to check on Hellebuyck’s availability. There is also speculation that Hellebuyck would be open to waiving his no-movement clause for a contender like Florida.
If trade talks ever became serious, the Panthers could potentially build a package around their No. 9 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, along with some of their top young prospects.
For now, Winnipeg remains committed to Hellebuyck. But with the NHL Draft approaching and speculation growing, his situation will be one to watch closely in the coming weeks.
