Emmanuel Acho Delivers Emotional Tribute to Aldon Smith

In a recent segment of the “Speakeasy” show, Acho reflected on the death of Smith. The two were never close friends, but Acho said he was familiar with Smith dating back to their college football days. Acho played for the Texas Longhorns, while Smith starred for the Missouri Tigers, allowing them to compete against one another on the field.

After hearing the tragic news, Acho shared a heartfelt message for Smith’s family, friends, and supporters.

“(I) was familiar with Aldon Smith while not being friends with Aldon Smith,” Acho said. “It’s heartbreaking and devastating what we are witnessing in the NFL. Within the last calendar year alone, I believe we have lost four different NFL active players and alumni under the age of 36. That is tragic if it were just one life.”

“Given the fact that it has now been several lives, it’s devastating, it is heartbreaking,” he added. “We consider these athletes players as opposed to humans. These athletes, they have families, some had girlfriends, all had parents, mothers that loved them, siblings that loved them.”

Smith was with a friend, who called 911 when he reportedly found the former San Francisco 49ers star slumped over in the passenger seat of his truck on Saturday morning. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and attempted life-saving measures before transporting him to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, Smith was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Friends revealed that one of Smith’s final acts before his passing was helping deliver pizzas to a local charity that serves the homeless. Earlier that day, he reportedly helped deliver 10 pizzas to CHAM Deliverance Ministry, which is dedicated to helping people in need.

The gesture proved the compassionate side of Smith that many knew personally, which is why Acho urged people to remember him for more than just his football accomplishments.

“In the case of Aldon Smith, 36 years of age, gone way too soon, and he spent his last day delivering food to those who could not otherwise fend for themselves, the homeless community,” Acho continued. “I also want us to make sure we remember him not just as an incredible athlete… but even more importantly than that, a human within people that loved him and are heartbroken and devastated because of his loss.”

Smith’s NFL career was marked by challenges that prevented him from fully reaching his potential, but his impact on the field remains undeniable. He was one of the most impactful pass rushers of his era, reaching the 30-sack milestone in just his first 27 career games.

That achievement made him the fastest player in NFL history to reach the milestone, surpassing a record previously held by Hall of Famer Reggie White.
