‘On the Bright Side…’ — Ex-NFL Player Uses Victor Wembanyama’s NBA Finals Loss to Take a Shot at LeBron James

Ex-NFL DT Breiden Fehoko thinks Victor Wembanyama should follow LeBron James' path to change teams in pursuit of a championship.

Victor Wembanyama was visibly heartbroken after the San Antonio Spurs came up short in their pursuit of winning the championship this season. As the Spurs continue to process their NBA Finals defeat to the New York Knicks, former NFL player Breiden Fehoko urged Wembanyama to draw inspiration from LeBron James’s career path.

Breiden Fehoko Suggests LeBron James-Style Path for Victor Wembanyama After Spurs’ Collapse

With the 94-90 win at San Antonio’s Frost Bank Center, the Knicks secured their first NBA championship since 1973, while the Spurs’ young roster was left devastated by the outcome. For Wembanyama, the 4-1 Finals defeat served as a valuable learning experience.

However, Fehoko thinks Wembanyama should follow James’ path and join forces with established stars elsewhere to pursue a championship.

“On the bright side for Victor Wembanyama. Lebron James showed that if you can’t win when the going gets tough, you can always leave and team up with the league’s best superstars to win a chip,” Fehoko wrote on X.

Fehoko’s post was a reference to James’ decision to leave Cleveland in 2010 after playing for the Cavaliers for seven seasons. James joined forces with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami, leading the Heat to back-to-back NBA titles. He later made another high-profile switch to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he later teamed up with Anthony Davis and helped deliver the franchise a championship in 2020.

However, the Spurs aren’t incapable of competing, and the thinking would even overlook the progress they made this season. San Antonio impressed throughout the playoffs, including a strong showing against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The team also put itself in favorable positions repeatedly against the Knicks and looked capable of winning multiple games in the Finals.

Game 5 followed a similar pattern, as the Spurs raced out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter. However, for the fourth time in the series, New York responded with a comeback and eventually closed out the victory.

Wembanyama himself admitted in his post-match conference that the series proved how little separates winning from losing at the highest level.

“One of the many things I learned was that the margin of error is very, very thin,” Wembanyama said. “Our domination stints are absolute. We absolutely dominated for most of the series, but our errors, our mistakes, are punished so hard that we can’t have ups and downs like this so much.”

Fehoko’s suggestion will continue to gain attention, but leaving the Spurs is far from the only path to success for Wembanyama. The Spurs exceeded expectations this season and possess one of the league’s most promising young players. Wembanyama is surrounded by emerging talent, including Dylan Harper, who shattered several rookie records and is expected to take another leap forward.

So, the Spurs fans are unlikely to embrace Fehoko’s bold proposal, but considering his reputation for delivering unfiltered opinions, the controversial take comes as little surprise.
