The Carolina Hurricanes completed a memorable postseason by finishing off the Vegas Golden Knights in six games and bringing the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh. The championship capped a dominant playoff run and added another major achievement to captain Jordan Staal’s long NHL career.
However, as Staal joined his family during the celebrations, one unexpected question became a talking point.
Jordan Staal’s Daughter Revisits Brady Tkachuk Fight
Staal was still soaking in Carolina’s Stanley Cup victory when his daughter, Abigail, turned the postgame press conference into one of the night’s most entertaining moments.
After the Hurricanes defeated Vegas 3-0 in Game 6 on Sunday night, Staal appeared before reporters alongside his three children and the Conn Smythe Trophy. Following the official questions, Abigail grabbed the microphone and decided to revisit an incident that occurred at the very beginning of Carolina’s playoff journey.
First, she jokingly questioned her father’s description of his children.
“I thought you called us crew?” Abigail asked.
“Crew, you’re a crew,” Staal replied.
Abigail then shifted the conversation back to the opening round against the Ottawa Senators.
“We’re going to go way back to the first game in the first season. Why did you punch that guy? Questions that need to be answered, guys.”
The question immediately drew laughter because it referenced Staal’s fight with Ottawa captain Brady Tkachuk during the opening seconds of Game 1. Rather than provide a detailed explanation, Staal smiled and ended the exchange by saying, “I’ll answer that later.”
The humorous moment connected the beginning and end of Carolina’s championship run. Just three seconds into Game 1 against Ottawa, Staal and Tkachuk dropped the gloves in a fight that set the tone for an intense postseason. Tkachuk landed the early punches before Staal responded with a heavy right hand as both captains tried to energize their teams.
What made the moment even more memorable was the context surrounding Staal’s postseason accomplishments.
The 37-year-old captain had just been named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner after leading Carolina through one of the strongest playoff runs in recent NHL history. He became the oldest player ever to win the award and helped guide the Hurricanes to a 16-3 postseason record.
The championship also marked another historic milestone in Staal’s career. By winning the Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2026 after previously capturing the title with Pittsburgh in 2009, he established an NHL record for the longest gap between championship victories at 17 years. The previous mark belonged to Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Chelios, who went 16 years between Stanley Cup wins with Montreal in 1986 and Detroit in 2002.
The championship carried special significance for Staal. After lifting the Cup, he reflected on the journey by saying, “It was still just as light. My goodness, what an amazing feeling.” He later added, “It’s a dream come true, by far,” while discussing the years spent helping build Carolina into a championship team.
