The Detroit Red Wings are staring down a high-stakes offseason game of musical chairs in the crease, and one highly touted young netminder is left without a secure spot. With an absolute logjam building in Hockeytown’s goaltending depth chart, the rumor mill is running wild, and goalie-hungry teams across the league, like the Edmonton Oilers, are already circling the opportunity.
The speculation has reached such a fever pitch that the young star’s agent finally had to step forward, breaking the silence to address the mounting drama surrounding his client’s future.
Sebastian Cossa’s Agent Addresses His Future As Oilers Monitor Red Wings’ Situation
Sebastian Cossa has become one of the most discussed young goaltenders on the trade market, but his agent has made it clear that his focus remains on opportunity rather than a specific exit strategy from Detroit.
Speaking with Bob Stauffer on Oilers Now, Gerry Johannson was asked whether Cossa was eager to receive the kind of NHL opportunity that other young goaltenders have recently earned. Johannson responded by emphasizing both Cossa’s talent level and the patience often required for goalies navigating different development paths.
“We know Sebastian Cossa is a very, very good goalie,” Johannson said. He went on to compare Cossa favorably to several highly regarded young netminders such as Jesper Wallstedt, Jakub Dobes, and Joel Hofer, adding that, in his view, the Red Wings prospect is “top shelf” and “as good as any of these young guys out there.”
Johannson also pushed back against the idea that every prospect follows the same timeline. He explained that circumstances vary from organization to organization and that development is often influenced by factors beyond a player’s control. “So you do have to stay patient,” he said.
While acknowledging the challenges facing Cossa, Johannson remained confident about the long-term outcome.
“So, something is going to happen. He will get his opportunity. I’m not sure how exactly, but we’ll worry about that later. But it’s going to happen,” Johannson said.
These comments arrive at a time when questions surrounding Cossa’s future continue to grow. Despite earning his second consecutive AHL All-Star selection and helping the Grand Rapids throughout the regular season, he lost playing time late in the year and did not start during the Calder Cup Playoffs after Michal Postava moved ahead on the depth chart.

Detroit’s organizational picture has also become increasingly crowded. Trey Augustine is expected to begin his professional career and is viewed by many evaluators as one of the top goaltending prospects in hockey. Combined with Postava’s emergence, the Red Wings suddenly have several young options competing for future NHL roles.
Contract and roster considerations add another context to the discussion.
Cossa is a restricted free agent this summer, and he will soon lose his waiver exemption status. That means Detroit cannot move him freely between the NHL and AHL without additional risk, increasing the pressure to make a decision on his role.
These factors have attracted interest from around the league. The Oilers, who continue searching for stability in goal, have frequently been linked to Cossa. His Alberta roots, junior hockey experience in Edmonton, and affordable contract outlook make him an appealing target.

For now, whether Cossa’s next opportunity comes in Detroit or elsewhere, his camp believes the opportunity itself is only a matter of time.
