The Ottawa Senators entered the offseason in evaluation mode after another early playoff exit, and that reality has cast doubts on captain Brady Tkachuk’s future with the franchise.
Trade chatter gained momentum across the hockey world as observers searched for bold ways to reshape the roster, even as both Tkachuk and team leadership pushed back against the noise.
Among the more intriguing ideas was a proposed swap involving St. Louis Blues winger Jordan Kyrou and Ottawa’s captain. But as the speculation grew, an insider with close ties to the Blues offered a reality check.
Blues Insider Throws Cold Water on Brady Tkachuk-for-Jordan Kyrou Trade Rumor
Tkachuk remains one of the biggest names circulating through the NHL rumor mill in 2026, but a potential deal involving Blues forward Kyrou appears far less realistic than some offseason discussions have suggested.
The concept emerged after Ottawa’s first-round playoff exit, with some hypothetical trade proposals imagining Tkachuk heading to St. Louis.
The connection was easy to make. Tkachuk grew up in the St. Louis area, and the Blues have been linked to several impact players as they explore ways to strengthen their roster under new general manager Alexander Steen.
Still, when the possibility of a Tkachuk-Kyrou deal was raised in a recent The Athletic mailbag, Blues insider Jeremy Rutherford did not sound optimistic.
Asked whether Kyrou could build his value and eventually become the centerpiece of a trade for Tkachuk next summer, Rutherford responded, “Kyrou is traded this summer. If he does make it through to next summer, I don’t think he’s waiving his no-trade clause to go to Ottawa.”
This response cuts directly to one of the biggest obstacles standing in the way of any blockbuster scenario.

Kyrou is entering the fourth year of his 8-year, $65 million contract and owns a full no-trade clause. Any move requires his approval. Tkachuk also carries significant protection through his contract, meaning both players would have substantial control over whether a deal could even happen.
The fit itself also raises questions.
Ottawa’s priorities suggest the Senators are looking for pieces that complement Tim Stützle and strengthen their core in specific areas. While Kyrou remains one of the league’s most dangerous transition players when at his best, his speed-driven offensive style may not align with what Ottawa is believed to be seeking if it were ever forced to consider moving its captain.
More importantly, there is still little evidence that the Senators have any desire to trade Tkachuk at all.
Following another disappointing playoff finish, outside speculation intensified around Ottawa’s franchise cornerstone. But Tkachuk publicly expressed frustration with the recurring rumors, emphasizing that he has never indicated a desire to leave.
General manager Steve Staios echoed that position, dismissing the trade talk as “nonsense” and reiterating the organization’s commitment to its captain.
This stance remains significant because Tkachuk is signed through the 2027-28 season and continues to be viewed as one of the central pieces of Ottawa’s long-term plans.
As for Kyrou, his future remains a separate storyline. The Blues winger has surfaced in trade speculation involving multiple teams, including the Edmonton Oilers, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, and New York Islanders. However, reports indicate St. Louis is seeking a substantial return, making any potential move complicated in its own right.

For now, the idea of swapping Kyrou for Tkachuk appears to be more fantasy than reality. While blockbuster proposals always generate attention during the offseason, Rutherford’s comments suggest this particular scenario faces far too many hurdles to gain serious traction.
