As Carlos Alcaraz’s absence from the tour continues, Andre Agassi has shared his opinion on the world No. 2’s wrist injury and shared his expectations for the Spaniard’s highly anticipated return. Alcaraz changed the course of the 2026 season when he sustained a wrist injury at the Barcelona Open, forcing him out of the French Open and also keeping him out of the Wimbledon Championships.
Andre Agassi Shares His Thoughts on Carlos Alcaraz’s Wrist Injury
While it is known that Alcaraz has been dealing with a wrist injury and has been spotted wearing a wrist brace during his hiatus, the exact nature of the issue remains under wraps.
During a recent episode of “The Big T” podcast, Agassi sought clarity on the world No. 2’s injury, pointing out that it was difficult to gauge what the 23-year-old’s comeback would look like without knowing which part of his wrist was affected.
“I mean, it’d be really nice if him or somebody on his behalf helps us understand what he’s really dealing with, you know, because we’re speculating. If we’re talking about a form of tendinitis, we’re talking about dorsal capsulitis, are we talking about carpal tunnel? I mean, what are we talking about and what’s the solvent and what’s the expectation on that solvent? I don’t know what he’s dealing with,” Agassi said.
The American expressed his belief that missing a few Grand Slams would be a worthwhile sacrifice if Alcaraz was simply allowing the injury to settle. However, he warned that if the injury required more serious treatment, the world No. 2 should prioritize a full recovery before returning to the court.
“If he’s dealing with something that he’s trying to calm down and he’s choosing that road before surgery, it’s a smart thing to do even if he’s missing a couple slams. But if he’s dealing with something that requires more radical measures, you need to choose wisely. You need to get it done by the best in the business. You need to let it heal because you got a long life ahead of you,” he added.
Agassi also suggested that the extended layoff could fuel the Spaniard’s competitive hunger on his eventual return, setting the stage for a “more vicious” Alcaraz, provided his wrist heals properly.
“One of the things I think it’ll do, it’ll make somebody who obviously loves the game and is hungry about the game even be that much more, let’s say, grateful for the opportunity to come back and do it,” he said. “I think you’re going to see a more vicious Alcaraz if he can take care of the one thing he only has one of, which is a right wrist.”
While there is no clear indication yet of when Carlos Alcaraz will return to the tour, fans will be hoping to see him compete during the North American hard-court swing so he can gain some match practice before his title defense at the US Open.
