Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has become the focus of growing trade speculation after reports indicated he submitted a short list of preferred destinations, signaling a potential willingness to leave the only NHL organization he has known.
After serving as the face of the team through difficult seasons, Larkin is seeking a fresh opportunity with a team closer to championship contention. The situation has created significant discussion across the league and raised fresh questions about Detroit’s direction.
With Larkin having identified preferred destinations, attention is on how the Red Wings plan to handle one of the biggest decisions of general manager Steve Yzerman’s tenure.

According to a report from Helene St. James, Larkin of the Detroit Free Press, Larkin has submitted a three-team wishlist consisting of the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights. The Detroit captain would reportedly waive his full no-trade clause only for these destinations, giving him substantial control over the process while narrowing Detroit’s negotiating field.
The report was later discussed by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman during an appearance on the Donnie & Dhali podcast. When asked about the situation, Friedman acknowledged that the reported destinations aligned with information he had heard around the league.
“There was a report today about three teams. It was Vegas, Florida, and Minnesota. I heard Minnesota. I heard Florida. Hadn’t heard Vegas, but that makes a lot of sense,” Friedman said.
More notably, Friedman suggested the organization is not pleased with how events have unfolded, while also recognizing the reality facing both sides.
“I think the Red Wings are upset, but I think they have to be practical. You know, I mean, it’s just time, I think, is what it is,” Friedman explained.
The reported list is hardly surprising given the caliber of the teams involved. Vegas is currently competing in the Stanley Cup Final and remains one of the league’s most aggressive organizations.
Florida recently established itself as a championship powerhouse after consecutive Stanley Cup victories in 2024 and 2025. Minnesota has emerged as a serious contender behind stars Kirill Kaprizov and Quinn Hughes while being guided by Team USA architect Bill Guerin.
Friedman believes winning is the primary factor behind Larkin’s thinking. “I believe at the end of the day, whether it’s one of those three teams or somebody else, it’s going to be somewhere where he thinks he can win,” he said.
Friedman also mentioned that teams such as Tampa Bay and Dallas could become relevant if discussions expand beyond the initial list.
The biggest challenge now centers on Detroit’s return. Friedman pointed out that contenders acquiring Larkin will be reluctant to weaken their current rosters. “A team that’s trading for Larkin isn’t going to want to hurt their chances to win,” he noted while discussing the difficulty of finding immediate help for Detroit.
This leaves Yzerman balancing two priorities: ending the league’s longest active playoff drought while maximizing value for a captain who still carries five years remaining on a contract worth $8.7 million annually. Whether the return includes NHL-ready talent, future assets, or a combination of both, Friedman expects movement across the league.
“I think this is going to be a really active summer,” Friedman said. “People like you and me, we’re going to be busy because I have a feeling this isn’t going to be the last one we hear about.”
