After the San Antonio Spurs lost the first two games at home, it seemed like the euphoria of beating the Oklahoma City Thunder had taken away some of their fire. But, trying to make it a series on the road at Madison Square Garden, they won their first game of these Finals.
With the president of the United States, Donald Trump, in attendance, the road team controlled a majority of the game. After the Spurs stole a victory on the road, the attention immediately shifted to the president, whose presence handed the home team its first loss in 14 games.
Donald Trump Bears Brunt of Knicks’ Game 3 Loss
A thoroughly dominant showing in the postseason had paved the way for New York to take the first two games of the Finals on the road. Winning with the sixth-highest margin of victory in NBA playoff history, the Knicks became only the second team to win 13 straight games in a single postseason.
That dominant run coming to a rabid New York crowd at the iconic Madison Square Garden seemed like the perfect recipe for the team to essentially close the deal. But their dominance sparked the attention of the president, who decided to attend the game.
With Trump seated in James Dolan’s private suite, it was the first time a sitting president had attended an NBA Finals game. But it also turned out to be bad luck for the Knicks, who suffered a heartbreaking loss that has breathed new life into the Spurs.
Former dual-threat quarterback turned analyst Robert Griffin III had a hilarious joke about the state of the game: “The San Antonio Spurs want Donald Trump to go to every game at Madison Square Garden.”
Even his podcast’s official account, “Outta Pocket With RG3,” reacted to the game, giving praise to the dominance on display from Wembanyama: “WEMBY SHOWED UP IN A BIG WAY FOR GAME 3.”

Putting together 32 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists, Wembanyama also added 2 steals and 3 blocks while knocking down 11 of his 18 shot attempts. After an uneven showing in the first two games of the series, he had his coming-out party in the Finals.
Jacob Infante of PFSN, too, was impressed by the quality of basketball on display. He proclaimed, “There hasn’t been a single bad game in this NBA Finals series so far, and I don’t think we get a single stinker tbh.”
NFL insider Josina Anderson, though, had her pulse on the state of the city after the game: “Welp…New Yorkers are pissed……..” The anger wasn’t just limited to the result, as the president’s presence caused a ton of issues for the fan base.
Because of his appearance, security was increased to the maximum at the Garden, with watch parties around MSG, a staple of the Knicks’ playoff basketball, canceled throughout. To make matters worse, the broadcast caught Trump dozing off in Dolan’s suite, adding further insult to injury.
Pat McAfee, who was part of an alternate broadcasting crew for Game 3 of the NBA Finals, also gave the Spurs their props on a momentous victory: “The San Antonio Spurs get a HUGE win in Madison Square Garden. They’re officially on the board in the NBA Finals.”

Their win marked only the second time in NBA Finals history that the road team won each of the first three games. As a result, Trey Wingo pointed out, “What home court advantage? Road team has won all 3 games in the NBA Finals.”

Some veterans of the sport, such as Shannon Sharpe and Dez Bryant, also had their opinions on the game and Trump’s presence. The Hall of Fame tight end was appreciative of the intensity and competitiveness of the first three games, claiming, “Want 7 gms more than anything.”
The Dallas Cowboys legend, on the other hand, believed the loss was karma for the Knicks’ fan base: “That’s what you Knicks fans get for hating on President Trump!” Earlier in the broadcast, the crowd was mercilessly booing the sitting president whenever the cameras shifted to him.
It made for a unique visual, as the usually rabid MSG crowd was firmly behind its team. Now, after the Game 3 loss, the series has new life. But it will be interesting to see if the Spurs can truly turn it into a competitive series, or if it was just a dip from the Knicks, who had essentially been playing flawless basketball for nearly 50 days.
