Brendan Sorsby secured a major win off the field on Monday and is set to play for Texas Tech in the upcoming college football season.
According to court documents, a Lubbock County Court granted Sorsby an injunction on Monday that allows him to play during the 2026 season after he was denied eligibility by the NCAA due to his gambling issues.

College football insider Pete Nakos shared what the court said about Sorsby’s case: “This court finds that the applicant has demonstrated that he will suffer a probable, imminent, and irreparable injury if this court does not issue this temporary injunction because he will be unable to participate as a member of Texas Tech University’s 2026 football team.”

Draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah took a dig at how easily the rules set up by the NCAA are bypassed, and said, “Here’s a list of enforceable rules in college football:

“Whoa! So Brendan Sorsby won’t be in the supplemental draft after all. At least he gave us some content for a couple months,” commented Zack Rosenblatt, who covers the New York Jets for The Athletic.

Sorsby is considered one of the top quarterbacks in the 2026 season. He reportedly turned down the NFL Draft for one more season of college football. As per On3, his NIL deal with Texas Tech is worth more than $5 million.
The injunction also states that the NCAA cannot prevent Sorsby from “practicing, playing, or otherwise participating on Texas Tech’s football team for the 2026 season.” However, the ruling does come with a penalty. Sorsby will be suspended for Texas Tech’s first two games of the 2026 college football season.

The injunction comes as a massive relief for Sorsby, who had earlier had his request for reinstatement denied by the NCAA and later had his appeal rejected.
The quarterback is alleged to have placed at least 40 bets involving the Indiana Hoosiers while being on their roster. Court filings allege that he used sportsbook accounts belonging to friends and family members to place roughly $90,000 in wagers over a four-year period.
Texas Tech had recommended a two-game suspension during the appeal process. The school argued that a harsher punishment could discourage future athletes from seeking help for gambling-related issues.
According to court documents, Sorsby did enter a gambling addiction rehabilitation center in Arizona in April. He completed a 35-day treatment program at the facility. His attorneys said he was diagnosed with gambling and anxiety disorders.
