‘It’s Too Risky’ — NFL Analyst Warns AFC Team To Stay Away From Brendan Sorsby In Supplemental Draft

What are the risks involved in the Browns selecting QB Brendan Sorsby in the upcoming supplemental draft? Find out more here.

Ahead of the NFL Supplemental Draft in July, Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is drawing plenty of attention, and many are eyeing the Cleveland Browns’ needs. The team is trying to determine its future at quarterback, with Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders competing for the starting job. The prospect of Sorsby joining the Browns, though, is fueling plenty of debate.

Browns Don’t Have the ‘Luxury’ To ‘Gamble’ on Brendan Sorsby

There’s much to be considered in the Browns having a chance to draft Sorsby. The Texas Tech quarterback was viewed as a potential first-round pick, with 7,208 career passing yards, 60 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions. He also bagged an 88.2 PFSN CFB QB Impact score last season, which ranked 10th in the nation.

Beneath all the shine, however, lies an alleged gambling addiction.

The star quarterback admitted to placing thousands of sports bets, including at least 40 on Indiana football games, while he was a player at the school. Having recently completed a 35-day gambling addiction treatment program, he was projected to enter the supplemental draft if his eligibility to play college football this year was denied.

While he’s considered an elite prospect, there are plenty of questions around his reliability. NFL analyst Daryl Ruiter analyzed the “gamble” that it would be for the Browns to pursue the quarterback on 92.3 The Fan.

“I agree wholeheartedly with what (head coach) Todd Monken said about a week ago at the Browns Foundation Golf Outing,” he said. “I think it’s too risky — too much of a gamble, quite frankly. There’s a lot to unpack with that, and I just don’t think the Browns have the luxury to take that kind of a chance, I really don’t. That’s some PTSD from prior chances that the Browns have taken at that position, but I think we’ve had enough of that.”

It’s been about 10 years since the Browns took a chance on another star from Texas, Johnny Manziel. The former Heisman winner, however, earned notoriety for his poor off-field conduct at Texas A&M before Cleveland drafted him in 2014.

The star arrived with plenty of baggage, and his NFL career didn’t last long; he was out of the league by 2016.

“Can we just get someone who doesn’t have baggage to do this?” Ruiter added. “If I were the Browns, I would not be interested. I know when you’re desperate, you do dumb, desperate things. And I think, for me, Sorsby — that’s too much desperation, and nothing good comes from that.”

While the Browns already have Watson and Sanders vying for the starting job, it remains to be seen whether the front office spices things up.

#UPDATE: Sorsby will not enter the supplemental draft as he’s now eligible to play the 2026 season in college with Texas Tech.  “A judge in district court in Lubbock County, Texas, has granted the injunction requested by Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby. He’s set to be eligible for the 2026 season,” ESPN’s Pete Thamel wrote on X.
