Connor McDavid continues to add achievements to a career that is already among the most accomplished of his generation. This week, the Edmonton Oilers captain received yet another honor from his peers, placing him alongside one of the most iconic names in NHL history.
The moment carried special significance because it unfolded away from the rink and in front of some of the people closest to him. The unexpected setting made the achievement even more meaningful and prompted a proud response from his wife, Lauren Kyle.

McDavid’s latest achievement came on Sunday when he captured his fifth Ted Lindsay Award, tying Wayne Gretzky for the most player-voted wins in the award’s history. Presented annually to the NHL’s most outstanding player as chosen by fellow players, the honor added another chapter to McDavid’s remarkable resume and reinforced the respect he commands throughout the league.
The award presentation was far from traditional. McDavid was enjoying a casual round at Magna Golf Club when a convoy of golf carts arrived near the ninth hole. Family members and close friends were part of the surprise, with his father, Brian McDavid, eventually stepping forward carrying the trophy.
Lauren Kyle played an important role in organizing the surprise and later shared her excitement on social media. One of her Instagram stories featured the Edmonton Oilers’ post announcing McDavid as the winner of his fifth Ted Lindsay Award.
Alongside the post, she wrote, “So proud,” followed by a white heart emoji.

Kyle also helped keep the surprise intact, reportedly telling others that McDavid believed they were simply playing nine holes of golf.
“Connor just thinks that we are going to play nine (holes) and have dinner afterward,” Kyle said. “We typically do that during the week, so he has no idea what to expect. I haven’t done too many surprises for Connor, but I think he’s going to be really thrown off.”
The award marked another dominant season for the Oilers captain. McDavid led the NHL with 138 points, recording 48 goals and 90 assists while securing his sixth Art Ross Trophy. For the Ted Lindsay, he was selected over fellow finalists Nikita Kucherov and Macklin Celebrini, further highlighting the league-wide appreciation for his performance.
After receiving the award, McDavid reflected on what the recognition meant to him. “This award, coming from the guys that you play against every single night and battle against every single night, to have them recognize me with an award like this, means so much,” he said.
McDavid previously won the award in 2016-17, 2017-18, 2020-21, and 2022-23 before earning his fifth title in 2025-26. By matching Gretzky’s total, he joined one of the most exclusive groups in NHL history.

For Kyle and McDavid, the celebration represented another milestone in a journey that began with a blind date in 2015 and led to their wedding in July 2024. This time, the spotlight belonged to hockey history, and the couple had another reason to celebrate together.
