Kentucky kept its run of fortunate offseason developments going by securing the commitment of highly touted high school recruit Ryan Hampton on Sunday, giving Wildcats head coach Mark Pope a top-caliber foundation piece for the 2027-28 season.
Hampton’s commitment to play in Lexington prompted a passionate response from the basketball community.
Basketball World Hails Kentucky HC Mark Pope After Landing Top 10 Prospect in Class of 2027
After falling short in the race for Class of 2026 No. 1-ranked recruit Tyran Stokes, Pope and his coaching staff ensured they would not miss out on Hampton’s commitment to play for the Wildcats in the 2027-28 season.
The 6’6″ small forward becomes Pope’s first commitment in that class, assuring Kentucky of a five-star high school prospect it lacked in Pope’s first two seasons as coach.

The news of Hampton, the No. 6-ranked high school prospect in the Class of 2027, committing to Kentucky had the basketball community buzzing.

Jones added that the former Wildcats team captain appeared to have redeemed himself after the harsh criticism he received earlier in the transfer portal window.
He noted that Pope’s offseason approach has led him to land elite transfer prospect Milan Momcilovic for the 2026-27 season and to build the team’s future by securing Hampton’s nod.
Field of 68 co-founder Jeff Goodman also praised the program for what he describes as a “huge pickup.”
Huge pickup for Mark Pope and Kentucky.

Radio and podcast host and author Aaron Torres summed up the Wildcats coach’s last 10 days of positive news, saying he had silenced many critics.
But Torres noted that Pope should start winning games against highly ranked opponents during this season’s nonconference stretch to demonstrate the Wildcats’ potential.

National recruiting analyst BigBlueDylan released Hampton’s comments after the news that Hampton committed to the Wildcats. Hampton said that former NBA champion and current Kentucky assistant coach Mo Williams sealed the deal.
The small forward from DME Academy (Daytona Beach, Florida) noted that the friendship between Williams and Hampton’s father, former SMU player Rod, was a major factor in his decision.
He also defended Pope for being honest about Kentucky’s high standards and the belief that everything is earned in the program.
“I’m ready for the challenge,” Hampton said. “It feels like home, so why not. I’m a top prospect, and I truly believe I will thrive at a top school. It’s been a long journey to get to this point. I thank my family, and I thank God. The best is yet to come.”
The Wildcats will have more than four months to fine-tune their preparations for the 2026-27 college basketball season, in hopes of advancing deeper into the NCAA Tournament. Pope and his coaching staff want to improve the team’s record this coming season so that more highly touted recruits will join Hampton in 2027-28.
