Brendan Sorsby may be moving to the NFL after all, as the NCAA delivered a major setback to the Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback. The NCAA has denied Sorsby’s appeal to restore eligibility for the 2026 college football season.
Sorsby lost his eligibility over multiple violations of the NCAA’s gambling policy. These also included wagers placed on Indiana Hoosiers games while he was with the program.
Albert Breer Floats Brendan Sorsby Going to the Miami Dolphins
Sorsby is awaiting a ruling from Texas Judge Ken Curry on a temporary injunction against the NCAA’s decision. Meanwhile, attention is already shifting toward a possible NFL Supplemental Draft appearance.
The NFL is set to hold its first Supplemental Draft since 2023, though it could be the first time a player is actually selected since 2019. Given the situation, Sorsby is expected to enter the supplemental draft if his college eligibility is not restored. NFL insider Albert Breer believes the Miami Dolphins could be among the teams keeping a close eye on the quarterback.
“Benefit for a team like the Cardinals, Jets, Dolphins or Browns on taking a second-round swing on Brendan Sorsby–if you hit, then that frees you up to take someone like Jeremiah Smith or Dylan Stewart next April,” Breer said in relation to Sorsby potentially entering the Supplemental draft.
The Dolphins currently have Malik Willis as their starting quarterback, but Sorsby would be a good developmental project for them. Similarly, the Jets and Cardinals have questions at the position in the long term and could look to acquire Texas Tech’s quarterback.
Breer also mentioned the Browns as an option, but that is highly unlikely because their head coach, Todd Monken, appears opposed to adding Sorsby to the team. “That’s not even come across my desk. I don’t think we’re in a position to want to go down that road,” Monken said. “In terms of the situation he’s put himself in, we all know what that is. He put himself in that situation. And we’ve seen in other sports with players that have been banned for life from playing in professional sports.”

Before the eligibility issues, Sorsby was among the top quarterback prospects in college football. Evaluators projected him as a potential first-round selection in the 2027 NFL Draft alongside Arch Manning, Dante Moore, and LaNorris Sellers. According to PFSN’s CFB QB Impact Metric, he posted an impact score of 88.2 last season, ranking 10th in the country.

However, not everyone believes Miami is the favorite. Insider Jason La Canfora suggested the Philadelphia Eagles could be the team most willing to gamble on Sorsby’s talent.
“There are some serious concerns about Sorsby’s gambling problem,” La Canfora wrote before pointing out that two general managers believe the Eagles are eyeing the quarterback.
“I think Howie grabs him in the second round,” one GM told La Canfora. “He’s getting a one for (receiver A.J.) Brown. I don’t think he’s scared to do it, and the stuff you hear about them being willing to move off of Hurts, that’s real.”
It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for Sorsby. For now, the 22-year-old Texas native is trying his best to play another season of college football.
