Mirra Andreeva just claimed the French Open trophy, defeating Polish qualifier Maja Chwalińska 6–3, 6–2 in the women’s singles final at Roland Garros. After lifting the Coupe Suzanne-Lenglen, Andreeva stepped up to the microphone and delivered a memorable victory speech, playfully taking aim at French tennis legend Mary Pierce.
Mirra Andreeva’s French Open Victory Speech Had a Lighthearted Mary Pierce Joke
This marks her maiden Grand Slam title, and the 19-year-old Russian is now the youngest woman to win the Roland Garros title since Monica Seles in 1992. She is also the first Russian woman to hoist a Grand Slam trophy since Maria Sharapova won the French Open back in 2014.
For the trophy presentation, two-time Grand Slam champion Pierce was on hand. Andreeva looked toward Pierce and deadpanned: “Thank you to FFT, Amélie. I don’t know if I should thank you, Mary, because you’ve beaten my coach once here in the final. But yeah, I’m joking, of course.”

It’s a callback to the year 2000, when Pierce defeated Conchita Martínez in the French Open final to claim the title. Today, the Spaniard is the woman sitting in Andreeva’s player box, expertly guiding the young prodigy.
Andreeva also thanked her team with refreshing honesty: “I want to thank my team. I know that sometimes I’m difficult to deal with. Thank you so much for pushing me and making me work even when I don’t feel like it.”
She gave a special shoutout to Chwalińska, her parents, and her sports psychologist, who, as she has revealed, helped her channel her anger.
Finally, Andreeva wrapped up her moment Snoop Dogg style: “Last but not least, I would like to thank myself for believing in myself and always giving 100 percent… trying every day to improve as a player and as a person,” she added.
During the American rapper’s iconic acceptance speech in November 2018, when he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, after thanking his faith, his family, and his longtime friends, he concluded by giving himself credit for never giving up. The speech has inspired Andreeva, who has started using the phrase “I want to thank me” during her post-match speeches, just for fun. Today, she was also wearing a black jacket with the same phrase written on it.
