‘Canadiens Would Be Willing to Pay A Real Price’ — Montreal Won’t Mess Around As They Target NJ Devils All-Star

The Montreal Canadiens have plans to address specific areas of their roster after a breakthrough campaign that pushed them deep into the playoffs. Management has already shown a willingness to pursue impact talent rather than settle for smaller additions. With several young pieces established and a stronger blueline in place, their focus is on strengthening the middle of the ice.

This objective has connected Montreal to one of the NHL’s most respected captains, creating intrigue around a situation that remains unresolved heading into the summer.

Devils’ Nico Hischier Emerges as Canadiens’ Top Target

Hischier may not officially be available, but that has not stopped the Montreal Canadiens from monitoring his situation closely. The New Jersey Devils captain and 2020 NHL All-Star is entering the final season of his current contract and becomes eligible to sign an extension on July 1, making the coming months important for both sides.

While early discussions between Devils general manager Sunny Mehta and Hischier’s camp have reportedly begun on a positive note, the lack of a public commitment on an extension has naturally attracted attention from around the league.

Montreal is among the teams watching most closely, particularly because the Canadiens continue searching for another high-end center to complement captain Nick Suzuki.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun recently highlighted why Montreal views Hischier as such an attractive fit. Writing in The Athletic, LeBrun stated, “Montreal will keep an eye on how the Larkin situation plays out, but to me, Hischier is the best fit for the Canadiens. And there’s no doubt the Habs are keeping super close tabs on that, too.”

He went even further by describing Hischier as “a left-handed Nick Suzuki,” adding that “the fit is beyond perfect for Montreal if Hischier were ever actually available.”

LeBrun also suggested the Canadiens would not hesitate if an opportunity emerged, writing, “I think the Canadiens would be willing to pay a real price and not mess around in that trade scenario.”

This assessment aligns with Montreal’s current position. After reaching the Eastern Conference Final, the organization appears ready to accelerate its timeline. Adding a player such as Hischier would give head coach Martin St. Louis a formidable 1-2 center combination while strengthening both special teams and defensive matchups.

From a roster-building standpoint, Montreal possesses several assets that could attract New Jersey’s attention. The Canadiens have promising prospects, future draft capital, and young NHL players who could be included in a blockbuster package.

Still, the biggest obstacle remains the Devils themselves. Hischier recorded 66 points in 82 games last season while handling major responsibilities in all situations. He also serves as team captain and remains one of the organization’s foundational players.

New Jersey currently has nearly $12 million in projected cap space and can negotiate an extension before his contract expires in 2027.

For now, Montreal’s interest appears genuine, but the path to acquiring Hischier depends on whether extension talks in New Jersey reach the finish line. Until then, the Canadiens will remain patient, prepared, and ready to act if a rare opportunity presents itself.
