Canadiens News and Rumors: St. Louis Blues Pull $65,000,000 Montreal Trade Target Off the Market

The Montreal Canadiens enter the offseason determined to strengthen a roster that showed meaningful progress and took an important step forward. With the blue line already receiving a boost through recent additions, the organization’s focus has now turned toward adding another high-end center to complement Nick Suzuki. As a result, Montreal has become heavily involved in one of the summer’s most closely watched trade discussions.

Rumors continued to build around a proven star signed to a long-term deal, and the Canadiens explored what would have been a franchise-altering move. However, a fresh update from St. Louis has significantly altered the situation and forced Montreal to consider other paths forward.

Blues Shut Down Robert Thomas Trade Talk as Canadiens Fall Short of Asking Price

Robert Thomas, who is signed to an 8-year, $65 million contract carrying an $8.125 million cap hit through the 2030-31 season, is no longer viewed as a realistic trade target for the Canadiens. After weeks of speculation connecting the Canadiens to the St. Louis Blues center, a new report has made the organization’s position clear.

St. Louis insider Andy Strickland shut down the rumors when he wrote on X: “Robert Thomas trade rumors can be put to rest. The Blues are not looking to move their #1 center. Expect Thomas to be on the roster when training camp begins in September.”

The update effectively ended talk of a blockbuster move involving one of the league’s most valuable centers.

The decision is significant because Montreal had been linked to Thomas for quite some time. The Canadiens viewed him as a potential long-term solution behind Nick Suzuki and an opportunity to strengthen the team’s center depth with a proven top-line player entering his prime years.

However, the asking price was always the biggest hurdle. Earlier this season, Canadiens insider Marco D’Amico reported that St. Louis was seeking a return similar in value to the package involved in the Quinn Hughes trade.

In his RG column, D’Amico wrote that the Blues were looking for “a similar impactful trade to that of Quinn Hughes,” adding that the value sought was equivalent to “four first-round picks” through a combination of roster players, draft selections, and elite NHL-ready prospects.

D’Amico further reported that Michael Hage and Kaiden Guhle were among the players who drew significant interest from the Blues.

While Montreal remained engaged in discussions and revisited talks with St. Louis, the inclusion of those key young assets became a major sticking point. For Canadiens management, sacrificing both players for one acquisition would have come at a substantial cost to the team’s long-term plans.

The Blues’ stance also reflects Thomas’ importance to their future. Despite dealing with injuries during the season, he produced 25 goals and 64 points in 64 games while finishing the year on a strong offensive run. Combined with his team-friendly contract, Thomas remains one of the most valuable pieces in St. Louis’ retooling effort.

With a transitioning GM office from Doug Armstrong to Alexander Steen, the Blues are holding firm on Thomas’ valuation. He will stay put for training camp, and Montreal’s pursuit appears over for now.

The Canadiens still want to add another impact forward, but they will likely have to explore different options after seeing one of their most intriguing targets officially pulled off the market.
