The hockey world has been rocked by a stunning development. Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has reportedly requested a trade, sending shockwaves across the NHL bang in the middle of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final.
Now, a former NHL player is raising serious questions about the state of the Red Wings franchise after their longtime captain decided he wants out.
Ex-NHLer Raises Concerns Over Dylan Larkin Situation in Detroit
For Dylan Larkin, Detroit wasn’t just where he played hockey; it was home. The Michigan native came through the National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, starred at the University of Michigan, and was eventually drafted by the Red Wings. He spent his entire 11-year NHL career in Detroit and subsequently took over captain duties with Detroit.
That’s why the trade request has caught so many people off guard. If someone with roots this deep in the organization wants out, it raises serious questions about what’s happening behind the scenes. Neither Larkin, his agent Pat Brisson, nor GM Steve Yzerman has publicly addressed the reports, but it’s clear frustrations have reached a tipping point.
With five years remaining on his contract and a full no-trade clause, Larkin has plenty of control over what happens next.
Former NHL defenseman Jordan Schmaltz didn’t hold back when reacting to the news of the Red Wings captain demanding a move. “The Detroit Red Wings are in shambles. Local kid. Never left the state of Michigan. Captain of hometown team wants out? Holy f**k #LGRW IN ONE!!” Schmaltz wrote.
Reports suggest Larkin’s frustration stems from two major issues. The Red Wings have now missed the playoffs for 10 straight seasons, the longest active drought in the NHL.
Larkin has appeared in only five playoff games during his entire NHL career, all coming during his rookie season in 2015-16. Now 29 years old, he may feel the clock is ticking on his opportunity to compete for a Stanley Cup.
There are also reports of a strained relationship between Larkin and executive vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman.
While Yzerman remains one of the most respected figures in Detroit hockey history, his long-term rebuilding plan has yet to deliver postseason success. The growing belief is that the captain and general manager no longer share the same vision for the franchise’s future.
There is also the case of Larkin suiting up for Team USA at the Winter Olympics and winning a gold medal. Getting a taste of winning is addictive, especially in best-on-best hockey. Larkin could be chasing that high after watching Detroit fall woefully short over and over again.
Because of his no-trade clause, Larkin holds all the cards. Yzerman won’t be bullied into a bad trade, but Larkin can still dictate where he goes by refusing to waive his clause for teams he doesn’t like. Teams desperate for a true top-line center, like the Boston Bruins and Dallas Stars, are already rumored to be preparing massive offers.
