When Connor McDavid signed his surprising two-year, $25 million contract extension, he did more than commit to the Edmonton Oilers for the short term; he sent a clear message to management.
By taking roughly $6.6 million less per season than he could have earned, McDavid provided GM Stan Bowman with extra cap flexibility to strengthen the roster. However, there is now added pressure on that gamble to pay off, considering the Oilers’ season ended with a disappointing first-round loss to the Anaheim Ducks.
Now, with pressure mounting and questions about the team’s future growing louder, one NHL analyst believes Bowman is entering the most critical offseason of his time in Edmonton.
Oilers Facing a Defining Moment in the Connor McDavid Era
Unlike many superstar players who sign long-term deals to establish stability, McDavid’s two-year extension leaves little room for complacency.
The 2026-27 season is shaping up as more than just another campaign. It effectively serves as a contract year, with every move Edmonton makes being viewed through the lens of McDavid’s long-term future.
If the Oilers struggle again or appear to be moving backward by the trade deadline, speculation about McDavid’s future will only intensify heading into the summer of 2027.
NHL analyst Craig Button believes the pressure on Bowman couldn’t be any greater. “The bottom line is Stan Bowman has a job right in front of him. And that job is significant. It’s serious. And if he doesn’t do the things to get this team back and close to Stanley Cup contention, that’s going to be a real message to Conor McDavid,” Button said.
Button noted that Connor McDavid’s decision to take less money on his extension was a significant gesture, giving management additional flexibility to improve the roster.
“And now for Stan Bowman, he has to deliver. There’s no other way. It doesn’t matter if I think he can or he can’t. The bottom line for him is he’s got to find a way to get the job done because if he doesn’t, I don’t like the thought of the repercussions and consequences,” Button noted.
Bowman’s offseason priorities are fairly clear. The Oilers need to add a dynamic top-six scoring winger, strengthen their blue line with a reliable shutdown defenseman, and improve their goaltending to a level that can hold up during a deep playoff run. If Edmonton hopes to return to Stanley Cup contention, addressing all three areas will be critical.
If Edmonton still lacks a clear path to championship contention when the final year of McDavid’s deal rolls around, all the leverage will be in McDavid’s hands.
Should McDavid signal any hesitation about signing another extension, the Oilers could face an unthinkable scenario: either trade the best player in hockey or risk watching him walk in free agency in 2028.

For that reason, the next year may be one of the most important in franchise history.
