‘Desperate to Move Past the Vrabel-Russini Story’ – Patriots Insider Reveals Ulterior Motive for A.J. Brown Trade

A Patriots beat writer argues that the A.J. Brown trade was a way for New England to "distract" from the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal.

The Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini scandal became one of the biggest storylines of the offseason after pictures of the pair hanging out at an adults-only resort in Arizona went viral.

Despite both of them initially dismissing the cheating allegations, Vrabel later cryptically admitted that his “previous actions don’t meet the standard that I hold myself to.” He also entered counseling alongside his family on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Recently, the attention has shifted away from Vrabel and Russini thanks to the Patriots’ blockbuster trade for A.J. Brown, and one beat writer believes that was by design.

Patriots Reporter Connects Dots Between A.J. Brown Trade and Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini Scandal

This week, the Patriots finally reached an agreement with the Philadelphia Eagles to acquire the star wide receiver, who is now reunited with his former head coach in Vrabel.

Patriots beat writer Ben Volin theorized that New England may have been motivated to trade for Brown to take the spotlight away from the Vrabel-Russini controversy.

“It would be naïve, though, not to consider another reason for making the trade now, to distract from the episode involving Vrabel and Dianna Russini,” Volin wrote. “Tuesday’s media session was previously scheduled to be open to the media, and it turned into the A.J. Brown Show, from Vrabel’s news conference to the interviews with the offensive coaches to Brown being the focus at practice to Brown speaking to reporters afterward.

“It certainly seems the Patriots were so desperate to move past the Vrabel-Russini story that they were willing to overpay for Brown,” he added.

Volin pointed out that while the Brown move was a good one for the Patriots, it wasn’t a perfect trade. He highlighted several “red flags” with Brown, including his chronic knee issue and reputation as a “diva.”

“In the Eagles’ Super Bowl run of 2024, Brown had his knee drained twice per week. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Monday night that the Rams opted against pursuing Brown in March because of concerns over his knee,” Volin wrote.

“Brown costs a good chunk of money, too. The Patriots owe him $29 million this year and $21 million next year, which isn’t bad if Brown keeps playing like an elite receiver, but isn’t cheap, either,” he added.

The Patriots gave the Eagles a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-rounder in exchange for Brown. Volin argues that this was a “stunning” haul for the Eagles considering the Patriots were the only team engaged in trade talks for Brown.

It remains to be seen if the Brown trade will pay off for the Patriots, but it does solve their need as NFL MVP runner-up Drake Maye now has a legitimate WR1.

It remains to be seen how the Vrabel-Russini scandal will come to an end, but intentional or not, the Brown trade has shifted attention away from the controversy for the time being.
