The Caitlin Clark-Stephanie White exchange continues to make headlines. The superstar guard and the Indiana Fever head coach went viral for their heated argument during the team’s 100-84 loss to the Portland Fire on Saturday.
Now, analyst Jason Whitlock is lambasting White while sharing his two cents on the fiery interaction between Clark and her coach.
Jason Whitlock Calls Out Stephanie White for ‘Sabotaging’ Caitlin Clark
In an X post, Whitlock claimed that White and Fever defensive assistant, Briann January, “sabotaged” Clark with an early substitution against Portland.
“Stephanie White and her defensive assistant Briann January sabotaged Caitlin Clark on Saturday. It was intentional,” Whitlock wrote. “In the history of basketball, no superstar player has ever been subbed out after 210 seconds of excellent playmaking. White disrupted her rhythm and left her on an island defensively.”

Whitlock’s comment came in response to a post that featured data of Clark’s first-quarter substitutions so far this season. The matchup against the Fire marked the earliest she checked out at 3 minutes and 30 seconds. White previously stated that she was following her “typical substitution pattern,” but this data contradicts that.
As for Clark, the All-Star guard downplayed the argument between her and White.
“Two people being competitive. Two people that really want to win,” Clark said. “I think a lot of those things happen all of the time, and I know there’s a camera on me, and that’s how it’s gonna be. But there’s a lot of people out there in the media or on TV that they think they know a lot of things, but they’re just blatantly wrong about a lot of things. And I ride for Steph. I ride for these girls. … Steph has my back more than anybody.”
White echoed a similar sentiment.
“I think what happened in that moment is I was challenging a player. It’s coaching, is what it is,” White said. “I don’t think it often becomes an issue if you’re watching it in men’s sports most of the time. But my relationship with Caitlin is great. I love Caitlin. I ride with her.”
The exchange between Clark and White occurred during a timeout in the second quarter on Saturday. Neither White nor Clark revealed what triggered the heated moment. Both were visibly upset during the exchange, and then White subbed out Clark for rookie Raven Johnson. Clark got out of her seat and shook her head, clearly frustrated.
The video made the rounds on social media and prompted a flood of reactions. Some sided with White, while others backed Clark.
As for Whitlock, he’s of the opinion that the coach and her staff didn’t set up Clark to succeed. Clark finished the game with just 6 points on 1-for-7 shooting from the field and 4-for-5 shooting from the free-throw line. She also recorded 2 rebounds, 6 assists, and 1 steal in 22 minutes of action.
This was the second straight loss for the Fever, who are now 10th in the WNBA standings with a 4-4 record. That said, it is still early in the season, and the Fever will hope to bounce back when they play Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream on Thursday.
