Rich Paul has consistently had LeBron James’ back on his podcast, doing his best to celebrate his premier client’s all-time great legacy. However, the renowned NBA agent has ruffled feathers as of late for what many consider to be taking his praise of James too far.
On Monday’s edition of “Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul,” Paul likened the four-time MVP’s public perception to that of late boxing legend Muhammad Ali, leaving the NBA world in utter disbelief.

NBA World Pushes Back on Rich Paul Comparing LeBron James to Muhammad Ali
James continued to pad his illustrious résumé in Year 23, securing his record-extending 22nd All-Star selection and improbably guiding the injury-plagued Los Angeles Lakers to the second round of the NBA playoffs at age 41.
Revisiting arguably the pinnacle of James’ storied career on Monday, Paul hailed the versatile forward’s decision to return to Cleveland and lead his native Cavaliers to their first NBA championship in 2016. After labeling James’ homecoming the “best situation” for him to cement his legacy, Paul unexpectedly brought Ali into the discussion.
“The idea of going back home, winning one. I felt that — I always looked at LeBron to be more of what I would say was the people’s champ, like Muhammad Ali was,” Paul said. “Even when he lost, I felt like people really embraced him.”
Paul’s co-host, Max Kellerman, added that, like Ali, James “also did not shy away from the issues of his day,” with the exchange prompting a flood of reactions online.

While the Lakers standout has his fair share of loyal supporters, many on X found it outlandish to compare James to a global cultural icon who was revered for his bold activism during the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement.
“😂😂😂😂 man, please remove all microphones from Rich Paul,” sports podcaster C.J. Wilson quipped.

“LeBron has done a lot of great things for people and his community off the floor, but he has NO business being compared to Muhammad Ali when you look at what Ali sacrificed for his morals and principles,” Emmy-nominated sportscaster Chris Williamson contended.

“Crazy comparison. One stood up against war. Went to jail for it. One supports China and will not take a pay cut,” one user reacted incredulously.

Meanwhile, some suggested that Paul’s overly bullish takes on James’ career are unintentionally damaging his reputation.
“Rich Paul does LeBron a disservice whenever he says things like this,” Gifdsports maintained.

Paul’s latest controversial statement came days after he disparaged James’ primary competitor in the NBA GOAT debate, Michael Jordan, by claiming that Jordan’s sidekick, Scottie Pippen, was the “most impactful player” on the Chicago Bulls’ six title teams.
As such, Paul doesn’t appear likely to dial back the hot takes any time soon, even if his remarks continue to generate backlash for his highest-profile client.
